Because most Filipinas think that the whiter you are, the more beautiful you become, which is true for some but not true for all... in my opinion.. |

It is an ironic twist.
The honey coloured person thinks that the white skinned person looks better so they spend their money on these skin lightening products. Meanwhile, elsewhere, we whites spend time and money on getting a healthy looking colour to our skin. |

possibly for the same reason that tanning is popular in other ethnic groups: it is culturally beautiful. different standards of beauty across nations can manifest into different personal practices concerning appearance. |

People in general are not content with what they have. They want something else than what they currently possess. That's why whitening soaps are selling very well here and in countries where people have dark skin. Countries where lighter skin is prevalent, on the other hand, use goods and services that darken the skin like tanning salons and "bronze" skin lotions. |

White skin is cute, tan skin is sexy though. |

Yeah, and why do others get tanned? Who in the world made both of those "rituals"? I hate to get tanned, I'm already brown! (Filipina here...) |

okay. this is what's up. many asian cultures see this as the conventional beauty right now, but it originates from the fact that if your skin is white you are more wealthy and well-off, while dark-skinned people are under the sun doing hard work. and people may not be aware of that, because now it is the "in" to have whiter skin and is seen as more "beautiful." |

It has nothing to do with colonial mentality or whatsoever. think about this for a second, Thailand one of the neighboring countries of the Philippines is also obsessed with whitening their skin. They were never influenced by the Western world, as they were never colonized. In fact a lot of asian countries share the same sentiments Filipnos have for whitening their skin. Take China, Japan, Indonesia, Malaysia, Vietnam, and even Korea. Just a few days ago I saw 2 Koreans... looking for a papaya soap (Ironicaly their skin is already a lot whiter than the normal Filippino). In general, my opinion is that asian countries in majority like their skin to be white because in asia that's what stands out, thats't what attract people and asian features in fact fit it well it ,compliments their features. In the western world however, their features indeed fit a tanned skin and it indeed compliments and makes them stand out. There is nothing wrong with the desire to have a more beautiful skin, and ofcourse you would want to be beautiful in the context of what your country or continent percieves to be beautiful... to be socially accepted is a need. On the other hand I ofcourse am speaking in a genreal way, and i by no means am saying that if you are asian and your skin is not white enough, you are ugly. Beauty is about harmony, even if you have the most perfect skin, but you dont know the clothes and make up to carry it with, everything else will look destructive. |

White skin glows, it attracts and makes you look clean. This is probably the reasons why Filipinas like to whiten their skins. |

it's in the biology of beauty, smooth skin means healthy, not infected with any disease that can hinder pregnancy. |

it's called colonial mentality (because of the different countries that had occupied the Philippines, or because of immigration)... they think 'white' is beautiful... |

In a man's point of view, Filipinas who has a whiter skin tone looks more attractive than those who have tanned skin. It easily catches men's attention. |

it's because filipinas are conscious. They think brown skin looks ugly but in fact brown skin looks alluring. And you know what guys, Caucasian people love brown skin, so, no need to make your skin whiten!! Be thankful that you don't look pale, right? |
