For starters, many people take their shoes off when they enter someone's houses - not just in Malaysia. It could be a sign of respect and simple hygiene reasons. |

This has been practiced all this while not only in Malaysia but in most Asian countries. It is like an Asian culture. Of course clealiness lays an important factor here. Unlike westerners, general Malaysians like to sit or even lying on the floor of their houses, it would be very unhygnienic if they were to do so with shoes running around in the house. |

Many cultures have this tradition - Japanese; Dutch; Canadian are some that I know.
Some countries it might be more of a practical measure than anything. |

In North America everyone takes their shoes off at the front door.
We just don't make it a crime if you have to run back into your house to grab something you forgot and you leave your shoes on... |

a house is considered as sacred as a temple or god's place so in amny asian cultures you would remove the shoes/footwear the way you would in a temple. |
