Why do Malaysians take off their shoes when entering houses?

but people of other countries don't do this. Are we "too" clean?

cos the floor here is not that cold

Square Pants
its hygienic reason...

did you know what your shoe step outside???

then you bring it inside your house...

you wouldnt do this if you learnt about microbiology...

main reason.. hygienic..

Maria N
For starters, many people take their shoes off when they enter someone's houses - not just in Malaysia. It could be a sign of respect and simple hygiene reasons.

This has been practiced all this while not only in Malaysia but in most Asian countries. It is like an Asian culture. Of course clealiness lays an important factor here. Unlike westerners, general Malaysians like to sit or even lying on the floor of their houses, it would be very unhygnienic if they were to do so with shoes running around in the house.

Its our culture. Hold on dude, not only Malaysians do that. Most Asians do this. Look at Arabs, Japanese, Koreans,.. Asians took off their shoes before entering their home.

Many cultures have this tradition - Japanese; Dutch; Canadian are some that I know.
Some countries it might be more of a practical measure than anything.

shoes is for protecting our feet from dangerous object outside.. so its useless at home where there is not much bacteria, worms or spiky things on the floor.

krazyDean
we dont have to vacuum our house everyday.
aiyark...itu pun mau tanya ka.
i think Japanese n Koreans take off their shoes too.

Mr. Bobo [Chantek ker..]
It is our culture, being practised by our forefathers long long time ago. hygenic is also an important matter why malaysian take off their shoes when entering houses. do you want somebody to enter your house with a animal poo under their shoes..yuk!

Homer J Marley
In North America everyone takes their shoes off at the front door.

We just don't make it a crime if you have to run back into your house to grab something you forgot and you leave your shoes on...

Lazarus
So they can show off their socks.....if not, why want to buy socks with patterns and colours?.......XD

bigb
a house is considered as sacred as a temple or god's place so in amny asian cultures you would remove the shoes/footwear the way you would in a temple.

So that if you terpijak tahi anjing or wateva in outdoors won't go in the house larhhh....if not later have to vacuum every 6 hours..kan?? lgipun it's our culture mah........say that exactly when a tourist asks you this question.."it's our culture mah.." ^_~
