I think u already answered ur own question, the spaniards did not let filipinos learn their language in case of revolts, in our history there are a few significant people who knew the language and in turn revolted the best way they know, writing. But I guess another reason for not being able to speak fluent spanish is that the spaniards thought highly of themselves, meaning they thought that their language should not be taught to such people, but actually my grandmother says they used to have spanish language in school before (and she´s fluent at it!), I guess right after the spanish era, americans were really tough on teaching the filipinos how to speak english not like spaniards. |

Spanish was the first official language of the Philippines since the conquest by Spain in the 16th century, and it remained for five centuries. Spanish was proclaimed the official language of the independent First Philippine Republic by the Malolos Constitution of 1899. Following the Philippine-American War, the First Philippine Republic was abolished and US sectarian colonist implemented English as the language of education and government, leaving Spanish and Tagalog language as co-official. Nevertheless, Spanish continued to be the language of business, culture, and to a certain extent in politics, until the 1970's. However, as younger and new generations of Filipinos educated in the English language became affluent to American pop culture, the use of Spanish gradually declined and no longer spoken by the majority of the population. |

"algunos de nosotros hablemos espanol porque lo aprendimos en la escuela." some of us still speak spanish because we learned it in school.
but you're so right...most filipinos are not really fluent in spanish (altho it used to be our official language)...and while we were indeed under spanish rule for what seemed like an eternity, education then was limited to the elite so our forefathers never really mastered the spanish language...besides we had our own native dialects that was (and still are) spoken at various regions.
the case of the english language is different. under the american rule, public education was mandated and english was made the official language (all books were in english), hence we are more fluent in english than in spanish. |

They speak tagalog. It is somewhat a cross between Spanish and Japanese, which makes sense because that is what Filipinos are. |

surprisingly two predominantly catholic countries in asia, philippines and timor leste, did not adopt the language of their european colonizers. although we borrowed a lot of spanish(philippines) and portuguese(timor leste), our austronesian languages were able to survive centuries of domination despite the use of spanish and english as the language of government and commerce in the philippines. the same way as portuguese and bahasa in timor leste.
the reason would be that austronesian languages are too developed and riched to be replaced by european languages. |

Yes, we have more than 1000 islands. They can not enforce there language. hehehehehe. The other one is we are strong to refuse to learn their language. Also, I guess there are so many dialects in our country that they just give up. However, they did manege to get some of their words in our dialects. THE BEST OF ALL IS THIS OUR ANCESTOR KICK THEIR SORRY BUTT OUT OF THE COUNTRY USING LONG STICK AND FISH FORK. HAHAHAHAHA. |
