Why do foreigner love filipinos carabao english (barok), but other filipinos wont like it? |
Americans and Foreign country like our carabao english, kahit barok! Because they can easily understand it. Unlike our fellow filipinos who trying hard to speak like a dollar and they getting annoyed or insulted when you speak barok english to them! So what is your opinion?
For me as a native born filipino! I like CARABAO ENGLISH!

I will answer your question based on my experience... I am an OFW and travelled on different places and encountered different races, it is not only Pinoys make this accent but even Japanese, Chinese, Arabs, Singaporeans, Koreans, Malaysian, Indians, Thailand, Brunei, Africans, other Euros, etc. though among people to have native language and to speak on other language maybe difficult to communicate in the manner the English people did. It is only the mentality of Pinoy that speaking the English language will make them a better person in this world but in my opinion is a wrong concept in communication. The best communication is to express your thoughts in a manner that it could be understood or accepted by the other party by expressing yourself no matter what or how you deliver yourself's expression on communication. The real language of the universe is the honest expression of how our thoughts to be understood and this means for another skills and you could develop your skills by being honest to yourself towards communication through other people with diferent language. |

Darling, I hope you know what you are talking about. Have you been to other countries before? They don't really love the so-called Carabao English but they think of it as ridiculous and stupid. I'm a Filipino too and I'm happy to know that we are the 3rd biggest English speaking country next to USA & UK but in order for us to compete globally we must improve our English. Especially for the professionals.. For instance: If you're a nurse working in USA you must conform to their accent especially if the doctor is giving you orders for the medications. It's really too risky but you have to understand. You cannot afford to be wrong because the life of the patient/s is at stake. I hope you get what I mean. Again, I'm a Filipino and I love my own country. I have nothing against it. (--,) |

I don't think they love carabao english, on the contrary they think of it as stupid, just like when a chinese or indian tries to speak english. Ako, I love my native tongue, but I try my best to speak the languages I know as fluent as I could. Hola. Buenos dias mi amigos aqui :)

I think because they find it very amusing.
Don't we equally find it amusing when a foreigner tries to speak Tagalog? even though they pronounced "mabuhay" as mabuhey and "kumusta" as comosta we can't help but smile and cheer.
Fluent or not, it's the effort that counts. |

Either ways, Filipinos and Foreigners thinks carabao(barok) English is funny. Foreigners like it because they admire them for still trying to speak english though at the same time, it's...well... funny. For Filipinos however, they dont like to be giggled or snickered at or embarassed in front of other people when they speak english, especially foreigners. |

Its funny isnt it?actually its sound cool sometimes especially to all those filipino who really dont have a good education and still trying to speak as hard as they can..and im proud of them..even though we are a 3rd country that suppose to have a good english..
Im not a good communicator..and some filipino like me are the only people feel that im trying hard....abahhhhhh...
But who cares?

Carabao English is definitely not helping to boost out a Filipino's pride.
It sounds too absurd and it's another term used for offending the way some of the Filipinos who are not fluent and are having difficulties to pronounce the English words. Don't you think? It's another excuse for being an ignorant. Ang sariling wika na sinasabi ni Rizal ay ang Pilipino or Tagalog and not the Carabao English. |

Foreigners like it because it sounds funny but cute. Just the same when foreigners try to talk tagalog. They try so hard even if it's broken but for us they sound funny and cute too. Yes, carabao english is cute. But since English is an international language it's better if we can learn to speak it fluently to our own advantage. |

Melanie Marquez "Don't judge my brother, he is not a book."
We knew what the model/ actress/ entrepreneur meant, but it's funny the way it was presented.
Witnessed this: a foreigner pulled into a gasoline station and wanted to have full service (antonym of self-service); all the gasoline attendants vanished except for one. He warmly greeted the tourist, served the client, answered the tourist's question about directions on how to get to a certain resort. His english was not grammatically correct, but the tourist understood what that attendant wanted to convey. The tourist gave him a generous tip and the attendant had the satisfaction of giving excellent service.
Both had positive result from the experience, the tourist got to his destination; and the pump attendant had a lovely meal. |

I don't think I know what carabao english is. Is it Taglish? If it's Taglish, don't worry too much about it because most non-English speaking people use some kind of a combination of local language and English. However, in formal communication, whether verbal or written, it is necessary to try to stick with proper English..... I know it can be difficult. But remember, the American English also contains a lot of borrowed (foreign) words. |

I personally feel that people should speak so they are understood.
I dislike it when a native English speaker speaks in broken English - this neither helps communications nor shows the correct pronounciation. I think it is insulting for a native English speaker to resort to "me, boy; you, girl" method of speaking.
That being said, as long as I understand what my Filipina grilfriend is trying to tell me (sometimes, I can tell just by her facial expression, but that's another story), that's fine.
How one speaks depends upon the circumstances. When I am teaching a university class, I use words and expressions I would not in a social context. Carabao English is just fine if it leads to mutual understanding. But, I do understand that some native Filipinos look down upon this form of "broken English". |

Hi, I spent alot of time in the PI, got to know the culture pretty well. I think it may be a bit of the old ways clashing with the new. Many other cultures often resent when change takes place. It hurts long lived generational pride. One reason why change happens so slow for some. Thankfully the Phillippines and The USA have a long history together. Did you know that Filipinoe citizens are the only people who can join the US military and remain a filipino citizen? |

No offense to some Filipinos out there but the truth is some of us Filipinos hate carabao english and even our own tagalog maybe because they think that it's old and is much fitting for poor people only. Just look at the parents in our country these days, what language do they teach their children? English. hindi na nila mahal ang kanilang sariling wika! |

As an American I don’t really speak English, as I found this out when I went to England. I do love to hear accents and it can be cute. When I speak Tagalog in the market I always get a better price, but I sometimes get chuckles and funny looks too.
One of the most memorable nights I had in Angeles City. There was an Australian trying to order a drink in a bar, but the bartender couldn’t understand the thick Auzy accent, and the mate couldn’t understand the Pinoy accent. I drank free all night as long as I translated Auzy to American which the bartender could understand. |

That would depend on the person speaking in English. If he or she pretends to be an elitist and keeps on speaking bad English, it would annoy me. However, if the person speaking in carabao English is a simple person with no enough educational attainment, I would understand and it would not annoy me for sure....
To answer your question why Filipinos are not likely to appreciate carabao English is because this country has been known to have people with good English as it is taught here and the fact that English is the language of the media, business, law and education. It's like we've been exposed to English in so many ways and some people don't even acquire good English. That could be one of the reasons why people get insulted when they hear this carabao English.
The thing that makes me wonder is why some people in the Philippines get annoyed when they hear a Filipino speak in English. And over the phone, why do people respect those who speak English and respond rudely when the caller speaks in tagalog.... I think I'd rather post this question..
See you in your answer... |

well, filipinos are the best english speaker than any other asian and european countries , except for those english speaker countries, filipinos can easy access for sure, and speaking of carabao english, it is not everybody who were like that, like me, i just make it for fun but when i am with my hubby, he admired me so much that i can even speak other dialects and have my second language too, and that he only know nothing but english.. see how smart we are? |

hahahaa... haven't heard this term "carabao" english for quite sometime. i don't mind it coz i was one of those who used to of talk that way. had a hard time with my visayan accent for the "i" and "e" are so different that my kids makes fun of my accent most of the time. sus, ambot ah! but to tell you, most americans here will not tolerate such kind of talking coz they don't have the patience to try to understand what you're saying. |

american have a hard time to grasp australian english because of their accent and the way they express their english and australian have a hard time to understand scottish english because of their accent and the way they express their english so the carabao english bridge that gap and helps in a better communication on both parties between the filipinos and foreigners
some filipinos were annoyed when you talk to them in carabao english because it is an insult to them and dr. jose rizal got nothing to do in carabao english and if your talking to a filipino why talked in carabao english talk in tagalog and spare your barok english to a foreigners |

Obviously, foreigners are happy that they can communicate to Filipinos in English whether it doesn't exactly sound Americanized. They can get clues on what Filipino are saying, and talking about.
in today's society, it seems that many Filipinos are accepting the Barok English, or English carabao.
personally, I am not that good in formal English as well, but i try everyday. When i speak broken english, it is up to someone if it annoys them.
Perhaps correcting someone in a nice way, when u think they need help, and when they ask you, if not...that's not your business at all!
somehow, it is not important how u say the messages, who is the messenger, the most important is the message itself. |

i like carabao english.....there's nothing like the way we Filipino's speak it.
i don't care what american like or what not. I speak properly when i'm talking to them.

On my own opinion it is because, we filipinos are more observant than them. It is not that we hate english carabao but, it somehow sounds very awkward, I also have american friends and observe that they also have wrong grammar sometimes, It was not been seen by an average english speaking filipinos 'coz we believe that americans are good in it since it was their primary language. for me, personally, i don't care if your english is barok, but don't feel bad if i correct your grammar. that's one way of learning. i'm an english teacher to teach and not to insult. By the way, even english teachers have lapses in their english. i know a lot, it is just the guts and the confident that makes them sounds good. hahaha I know a lot of them... just a piece of advise, even your not that good in english but once you talk, have confidence. you will sound good for sure. |

most foreigners with english as their first language do not use formal english. they don't care 'bout the grammar and spelling as long as they could communicate. unlike us who are trained (very well trained in school) we use english properly.
same as tagalog, since it's our first language. normally we don't focus nor care about how we spell the terms nor how to use it formally. as long as we can convey the message clearly..=)

I'm not sure what you mean by carabao english, but I have no problem with a tagalog or visaya -speaker who I can understand. Their accent does not faze me at all nor their tendency to skewer sentences. What's important to me is that they try.
I think I know what you mean by 'barok'. 'Barok' english is a derogatory term used by Filipinos to belittle their own countrymen whose english language skills may not be up to par with the accuser. I think pinoys should stop labeling each other that way. All it does is discourage the victim from further learning the language. |
