The population's already 4x larger than that of the US. If there wasn't any kind of control on it, there would be no way for the country to support itself.

During the Cultural Revolution, leaders encouraged people to have a whole bunch of kids. Then, when the population exploded, they decided that under most circumstances, couples could only have one child.

Exceptions are made for people in certain ethnic/cultural groups. Also, they might make an exception for people in earthquake zones (but I don't know if they've decided on that yet.)

Because its population control, they have sooooo many people there. if the whole population of China walked by you in a line of 8 people wide the line would never end. and that is true. They pop out babies like there is no tomarrow. China had to do something about it.

Han ethnic can only have one kid, but other minority ethnics could have more, and rural area are not controled so tightly.

Dunno if that's exactly what's going on, but it's basically because of population control.

Its population control. However the reason for choosing gender is based upon carrying name, and for the fact that girls reproduce and keeping them at a lower rate keeps the population lower. People don't exactly put prices on they're children.

The government had introduced a polity, limiting the number of children people have, to help control its pressure on its country.

If you break it you are fined and the government does not support that kid, ie pay for its education etc. So in many families there they can not afford to pay the fines or support there kids they will just have the number of kids there allowed.
