Felicity???
To wish you a pleasant dreams while you were sleeping. <*-*>

Because they'd rather not say "I hope you have deathly dreams in which you're swallowed whole by a crocodile only to discover that you're unable to move and are slowly being rotted away by sulfuric acids."

You may not, but I prefer "Sweet dreams." :o

TOAST with вυттєÑâ„¢
It's basically a kind gesture.
It's wishing that the person has a nice sleep, and a good dream- instead of a nightmare.

MAYBE BECAUSE WHEN YOU GO TO SLEEP PEOPLE WANT YOU TO HAVE SWEET DREAMS INSTEAD OF NIGHTMARES,GET IT?

2 cents
They want you to have pleasant dreams instead of nightmares.

smarty pants
its to ward off any nightmares that you might have.
kinda like don't let the bed bugs bite...lol

Ari
They're just wishing you a peaceful night's rest.

~*Chica*~
Well I think people say ''sweet dreams'',because they want to that person to think positive thoughts before they go to sleep. Sometimes when people say it, it makes people feel good/happy. So they think happy thoughts. :)

just because they are being sweet.

We always dream when we sleep. Always! Sometimes we don't realize it, but we do. (Yes you that say you don't, DO! lol!) The Human Brain must be active all the time. When we sleep the activity slows down, but it's still there. I'm not just referring to the automatic functions the brain controls of breathing, and your heart beating. The brain must stay active or it will cease to function. No brain =death. (That's a No Brainer! lol!) So since you do dream, which would you prefer? Good or bad dreams? I hope all your dreams are good ones.

maej
sleep is having our subconscious thoughts emerge into consciousness, letting our minds wander and our spirits soar.

when we say sweet dreams, we really meant, 'off to wander land you go, enjoy your stay there, bring pleasant memories' or for couples, a subtle way of saying, 'think of me before you sleep so that you can dream of me'... mushy but true

having a good sleep means waking up to a brand new day with a refreshed and uplifted spirit... sweet dreams!

Sophie79
Because they wish you a peaceful night filled with pleasant dreams... Not disturbed sleep filled with nightmares.

we often dream when we sleep so we dont want bad dreams waking us up, it will somehow make our day uncomfortable.
we dont want people waking up on the wrong side of the bed.

Because it's better than saying, have a bloody and scary nightmare, see you in the morning!!!
It makes people feel good and that people care about them enough to wish them the best, even during sleep....

annabelle p
It's just a way of wishing them a pleasant or peaceful night as they sleep.

Good wishes on to you, for you to have a pleasant dream and not a horrible nightmare.

It would i suppose the equivalent of saying "good luck" to someone.

Eagiusti
i grew up saying that w/my mom. "good night, sweet dreams, god bless you, i love you, see you in the morning." lol. it became practically a ritual to me. but i think it's just the same as telling some one to have a good day. you are just wishing them well ... except they are going to sleep, and will probably dream at some point, so you wish them sweet dreams as opposed to nightmares.

:-)
