Thats like asking "Why is my head Oval instead of perfectly circular?" |

making a circular box would be inefficient and stupid, plus some pizza is square anyway. |

The board used to make the boxes comes in specific rectangular sizes. Hence, to efficiently maximise the use of the board, without wastage, is to cut them into squares or rectangles. In other word, it is cheaper to produce square/rectangular boxes than circular shapes.
Also, by using a circular box, there's no room for your fingers to lift the pizza out. You may need to tip the box over upside down in order to get the pizza out. Messy job..
Pizza Hut has square pizza, btw, if the circle thing bothers you so much..... |

square boxes are easier to make and also they are easy in taking out the pizza from the corners... |
|

Miss Lix

because the box is easier to make and a whole lot cheaper. its also easier to stack squares rather than circles. it probably gives the pizza a bit more protection |

boxes are easier and more simplier to make that way also some pizzas are sqaure but for the round ones you can put you hand in with some space and take a slice. |

I'm not sure what the technical answer would be, but here is my personal view:
Try cutting the pizza into slices (because the pizza place did a shoddy job of it), then slide the serving spatula underneath the pizza to get a slice in order to shimmy it onto your plate. Yeh---try that with a circular box that surrounds the pizza from edge to edge and see how far you get without making your pizza look like baked ziti. ;-) |

So the pizza gets stopped in the corners instead of swishing around in a circular box when people drive back home from picking up the pizza. Plus it's easier to make boxes. |

it is cheaper to make square boxes and in the beginning..pizza was made in trays and still is in many small towns. Rectangular trays. You can buy slices instead of a whole pie. the slices are square. |

Well, as others have said - it is easier (read: cheaper) to make square boxes. And in the case of handmade pizzas, it is easier to make a round base of dough.
Sometimes, in nicer pizza places, you can see the cooks form the dough base by rotating it in their hands... |

ause we find it pretty hard to make round boxes, so we said, what the hell, why not make them square?
Eh, ya know what im sayin'? |

Because it's a pizza " BOX" not a pizza "CIRCLE"! Boxes are square, not round. And if it were round, it wouldn't be too convenient. Imagine the lid. Where would it hold? HOW would it hold? The perforation would be a semi circle, and that would not be too convenient.
LOTS of round things come in square boxes. But I bet you'd have a hard time naming something square that came in a round box!! |

It is cost effective to have a square shape. Manufacturing a round box would be way too expensive.
Also, if the boxes are mass produced they would have to be very customized when circular. With a square companies can be appropate for a slight variety of sizes. |
