Thank you. I have never doubted my skin complexion especially these days more than ever when I hear stories about how my coworkers are spending $$$ at the tanning salon. They are addicted to it. They never think they are dark enough and then they tell me that I'm lucky because I was born with a tan. Then I tell them I see nothing wrong w/ their color and I mean it. |

I don't... I really have no preference. I like every skin color there is, they all have their special things. Try to go to Africa if you are White, or try going up north to Canada if you are black... It's all about adaptations. |

i'm morena and i'd like to believe that this is such an exotic color. and even if some people don't agree, i still am happy with my natural skin color. i'd probably dye my hair (when the time comes) but i'd never mess with my exotic tone! no whitening agents for me. altho i will not think less of people who want to change their skin color (lighter or darker). |

thank you.
I've asked myself that several times why some Filipinos are so obsessed to having white skin where in fact many people are trying to have a skintone like ours... it just doesn't make sense.
but I guess it all comes back to culture, the old belief instilled by our ancestors that white skinned people are the superior ones... but that was history.
I am content with my color, thankful really, and am proud to be brown.
btw, I also have a friend like you (a Brit too) who had said the same thing. |

dude im filipino, and im light colored tan, but i feel white, and i try to go under the sun to get a tan... my mom says in the philippines, black is considered an ugly color skin, i think its actually an improvement. |

it is because the media portrays beauty as she who is white or mestiza... thus most filipinas have a preconceived notion or definition of "beauty" albeit, a twisted one.
low self-esteem issues play a role too. most filipinos with "pinoy" complexion at some points of their lives have been teased for their color by their fellow filipinos. as kids, many were taunted "ita," "baluga" "maitim" and whatnot thus these people grew up thinking that their color is something that tarnishes them.
as a child, i used to envy my cousins who were mestizas. as a teen, i used whitening products and i am sure most "pinays" have done the same. at 18, i stopped this foolishness.
now i love my color and never again will i let the world or other people impose their standards of beauty on me.
as christina aguilera sang,
i am beautiful no matter what they say... :) |

the same thing that keep popping out in my mind..im pure Pinoy and I just dont get the whole concept why filipinos prefer paler skin than brown skin....well as far as history says there is a reason why filipinos love paler skin
colonial mentality before, spanish era always have mestizos on high esteem because they come from higher class...and mestizos have pale skin, though they are a mix of spanish and native blood...and in the lower class, called INDIOS the pure natives were always opressed and sadly not given any importance in society....so thats little history
nowadays it still is stuck on our minds that if u have pale skin you are more beautiful than brown skin...and paler skin sometimes connotes class in society.....plus with the media that stress out for all filipinos to have paler skin, which i believe is only aimed for business and provit....i have caucasian friends who were shocked to see all the whitening creams, soaps, and lotions...and they are all jealous of our brown skin....and asked me too? why? i said....well media media media....
i never did go into the whitening craze i believe my skin is perfect....and i know alot of europeans and americans pay so much just to get this type of skin tone....so now that i naturally have it all i need is to flaunt it...hhehehehe.....
Im well blessed for i come from a land of beautiful people with a beautiful culture...i aint changing anything in it...kudos:) |

Some personnel preferences we can't explain, but we must respect. Some like tall, some short, some black, some white, some long hair, some short hair, some blond, some brunette, some fat, some thin, some green eyes, some dark eyes, some brown eyes.
Why do not try to understand, but respect our differences and give each one of us the right to don't explain our whys ? |

I am just guessing, but I think it has to do with dark skin being associated with having to work hard as unskilled labor out in the sun. While light skin is a sign that you don't have to work out in the sun for a living.
I for one, hate it that my pail skin burns so quickly in the sun, and I really envy my Asian wife's beautiful olive colored skin.

im the athletic type,i played basketball, volleyball and baseball for the school so i really have dark skin.when i was in high school they cut me out from the cheering squad because the teacher thought im too dark to be in the cheering squad.and it hurts me a lot ,from then on i thought i was ugly because of my skin and i wanted to be white like my high school mates.so wanting to be white has nothing to do with contentment it has something to do with the peer pressure.but i outgrew that feeling as i age,i was once pursued by a famous cager so i believe im not ugly anymore lolz |

Because people find it hard to be content with what they have.
And that explains why you & other fair-skinned people want to have a tan & why people with a darker skin tone prefer to have their skin bleached. |

well if the Spanish and the Americans did not occupy the Philippines, then Filipinos would not find white as the only definition on beauty. |

That's the same thing I'm wondering. Being Filipina and coming from the US, I was surprised to go to the Philippines to see so many whitening products (soaps, lotions, etc) and even whitening booths! I had never even heard of it before. I mean, in California - everyone wants to be tan. I guess it's just a culture thing? Anyway I do know that being dark isn't necessarily attractive in the Philippines so that's probably it. |

White people go to sunny places to tan their skin, Filipinos use their money on bleaching treatments to make their skin whiter. Indians (as in India indians) have surgery performed on their noses to make it smaller, Filipinos want it more protruded. White people head to the Philippines in search for a life mate, Filipino men drool over white women. It's just human nature, man. You tend to want more what you don't or can't easily have.
Oh by the way... I have a 29 year old caucasian wife. That makes us even... balance. |

For the same reason I want white sheets on my bed.
So that when I see the bedbugs, and stomp on 'em, I could relish the stark color of blood in contrast with the white. And when others escape, I could easily zoom in on them. |

During the Spanish-era times in the Philippines, most dark-skinned people were poor because of farming and selling under the sun. So if someone has a fair skin, it's assumed that he/she is from a well-off family and people have high respect and look up to those families. That way of thinking was passed along from generation to generations, that's why most Filipinos have that "good image" of fair/white-skinned people and think that they look better than those who are tan-skinned ones.
I personally like mine medium fair, having tan skin just doesn't suit me. |

I guess that it just became a sort of a status symbol.. The whiter your skin is, the more beautiful or richer people think you are... |

i don't delve much on the color for as long the skin has a smooth complexion without blemishes.
i also observed that filipinos really go for the fair complexion. you are beautiful if you have a white skin. what the filipinos don't know is that we have the best skin tone for as long as it is blemish free. white skin are prone to freckles and other skin markings. having a white skin is only beautiful if you are having a tattoo so that it can be seen readily. |
