Sorry to hear your story Eki. I am a European that lived most of my life in America, and the past 13 years in Asia. While in Taiwan, I met my future wife whom I married in the Philippines. If you become part of the "tribe", you will be treated as one of the family.BUT you go to the local store, the palengke, prices double because you're not a Filipino and therefore RICH. After people get to know you, they will realize what the facts are.
Now about directions. You have a special problem in Manila, because the congress has to pass a lot of laws.... they do this by changing names of the streets, and that may be why people don't know how to get you where you want to go. Another possibility is they just hop on a jeepney and only recognize the place they want. Finally, it really kills me, but I haven't met ANYONE who could read a map. |

I was born in America, California to be exact, and I'm Filipino. I lived in the Philippines for 5 years total and here's what I can tell you. Depending on the place you're at, the locals are rude or kind. My dad was from Mindanao (the lowest section of the Philippine Islands) and I've lived there for 4 of the 5 years I've been in the Philippines, so the dialect I am most comfortable speaking in is Visaya (Cebuano). In Manila, which is in Luzon (a separate island from Mindanao), I finished my Senior year of High School. I've experimented and learned a lot of people from "higher class" areas tend to look down on people from "lower class" areas. I told some people that I was from America and I told some people I was from Mindanao. When I told people I was from America, they we're extremely friendly, but when I told people I was from Mindanao, I would get some nasty looks and treated as a minority. I've lived in Mindanao for a while and I also knew about the active Terrorism in some parts of Mindanao. Because of this, a lot of people would make jokes at me like asking if I was a part of Abu Sayaff (Which is a Muslim terrorist group based around the southern islands of the Philippines, including Mindanao) and pretty much everyone assumed I was Muslim. Another thing was that people that were not Visayan, would call you "Bisaya" (the Filipino way to say Visaya) as an insult if you did something stupid. Even now, I would get those kind of comments from non-Visayan Filipinos (mostly Tagalog) here in America. So I'm guessing that some of the people you met were like the people that I met in high school, extremely prejudice. I still love the Philippines, but I prefer to be in Mindanao than Luzon, because I get less prejudice there. I'm sorry you had a rough time. |

hmmm...maybe those people are having hard time to communicate with you, can you understand tagalog? or only few phrases? people might have hard time to communicate because they are thinking whether you can understand them back. Or they can be in a hurry. Maybe you got the wrong person to ask. |

hi! im a filipino, no offense taken.
sad to hear your story, and unfortunately, i believe your story.
this is true and sometimes im a filipino you described in your story but now im trying to be a better filipino when i read a book called "Bakit Baliktad Magbasa Ng Libro Ang Mga Pilipino" by Bob ong. It sad to say that filipinos you describe there still exist. and researches in internet only tells you the good side of the country. maybe its just a coincidence that people cant speak english in that place or theyre busy or theyre just plain rude. it happens to me too. i live in mindanao, i always go to luzon and visayas in some contests and when they ask where i came from and i say mindanao they will not talk to me again. i go to boracay every year and every year boracay gets dirtier. boracay is not as beautiful as 5 years ago. lack of maintenance. sorry...
i cant blame you if you wont go back again... |

lol. When I was in Manila, I asked for directions , boarded a bus which the man says will take me there in my destination and to make story short I got freaking lost. I end up taking a cab, like always, and missed my appointment. Anyway, the other one is right. People there are not from Manila and usually are from the province. They are not smiling because they probably shy to show they're crooked or no teeth at all :D.
I find that people from the province are more friendly. Cebu is pretty nice, I also got lost from riding wrong jeepney but I met a nice fellow who taught me which right jeep to take, fare and like terminals and other stuffs. Bohol is also wonderful, CDO, Camiguin & Bukidnon is also has wonderful people & places to see. |

have you ever been to other parts of asia? (singapore, thailand, malaysia, japan, indonesia, etc.?) well, i have been to most of them, and as far as i know, Philippines is a haven for tourists (as far as communicating with the locals is concerned). You could be lost for hours on the city streets of other asian countries, and not meet a single local who could converse in modest english.
assuming that all that you have said above were all true, i would want to think that you were asking for a non-existent address, because i doubt it if a filipino would deny and refuse someone who is SIMPLY asking for directions.
am sorry to hear about your disappointments with boracay, recently that has been overpopulated with guests and tourists, and i agree with you, that the government should do something for the conservation of the island...hmm why not try the other prime tourist spots of the world? i'm sure all your expectations shall be, in no doubt, be satisfied in there. I'm just afraid that would cost you a few extra thousands. But quality usually comes with a price, dont you think? :)
Thank you for visiting our country and Good luck on your next trip! |

maybe the people you asked directions for didn't understand the way you spoke Tagalog and you asked the wrong person, maybe they didn't know the directions at all?
my family went to Boracay 2008May, it was still good but not as good as it was last year2006.
I really am sad that you had this experience.. |

its a matter of mis communication... maybe you asked the person who hardly understand english or maybe its your accent that made them not understand what you are asking.. or maybe the way you asked them..
about boracay..maybe a storm had just passed by when you arrived in the island...
in short, it was not your day. |

i don't believe your story. |

don't assume that every Filipino knows the direction and places of the country. most cases, people whom you met in Manila are from different places/different islands and just seeking jobs in Manila, so they don't have more knowledge about everything. furthermore, if you are an English speaking tourist, it would be difficult for most to give directions and instructions as they have a hard time in speaking the language, not unless those you met are college degree holders or have known much in English. and perhaps, it was just a coincidence that you didn't meet the people who can guide you well in the country.
with regards to Boracay, i went there too of year 2003 and a great place (maybe that time only if what you said is true).
lastly, referring only thru websites, books and the like is not useful enough as those being posted and printed are only the real beauties on the spot it was taken for pictures. just like other countries too.
Edit: oops! if i am not wrong, you are a Japanese? basing on your name "eki e". but sorry if i got mistaken. |

to be honest, i find your story hard to believe. Filipinos are, by nature, hospitable, even in the big cities. If true, then you probably was in the crowd of the worst Filipinos, in the worst places in the country, and in the worst of times. Re: garbage in Boracay, though, its there but not as worse as you painted it to be. |

Sorry about your horror story. An advice when anyone travels is to get a reliable guide the first time. I also go through the dilemma at times when I drive and the people around do not have a sense of direction in their own backyard. I just go and ask till I find someone who knows the place.
Boracay has evolved and is not the pristine beach it used to be. There are portions there that are well maintained but run by the pricier hotels. My foreign friends enjoyed their trips there but of course paid a higher price. Next time, join a tour group instead or get a recommended local guide. |

It seems like maybe you did something wrong. I'm from there and everywhere I go,when i visit, people are loving, kind and very helpful when it comes to tourists. They know how to speak some English, just about any of them, so just ask them that way.(I don't even know how to speak it anymore, I came to the US in 01. Just know a little.) Sometimes theres more than one way to say something. Or if you can, hire someone to translate if possible. There are many different ways you could solve this one. I'm not offended but, the people there aren't like this, and just because the people might be "mean" that shouldn't have to stop you from seeing the breath taking sceneries there. =D |
