Why is Singapore so clean?

Whats the story?

Show all answers

Ya Umm!
Well we have been educated in such a way that littering is prohibited. Every corner you turn, you will definitely see a rubbish bin, hence there are no reason for you to litter. We will be fined for throwing cigarette butts, tissues, anything.. Chewing gum was banned in the early 90s, but now the ban is lifted after Singaporeans are more aware of the things that they shouldn't do. So in a way, it is the people who make the city so clean, we are trained to do so and we continue to behave that way when we travel. Once in pakistan, I carried my empty coke can for abt an hour, until i found a bin.. ;)

Japan is also very clean. The answer is simple, people CARE. People has RESPECT, and MORAL. That is all.

Because we are a Fine city.
[That means to say, littering is an offence punishable by law where usually a fine is imposed.]

Singapore's clean & green image is the result of more than two decades of public education campaigns & strict laws against littering.Littering of any kind is subject up to S$1,000 fine for first offenders,up to S$2,000 fine & a stint of corrective work order cleaning a public place for repeat offenders.

They like to keep it clean?

katreena_katz
because people care.

They take pride in the cleanliness of their country, and there are serious penalties if you're caught littering.

huangfuren
It's a FINE city. Y}ou will be slapped with a work order to pick up rubbish if you are caught littering and fined. Singapore is clean on a large part due to the cleaners. I'd say that Japan is cleaner than Singapore as the people are more civic and environmental conscious. Try looking at the ground floor area around HDB flats before daybreak - in some areas it is heavily littered as residents simply throw rubbish out of windows.

Kingston D
This is because Singapore has been educating people on keeping Singapore clean. Its also because there are stiff fines and penalties like corrective work order for those who been caught of littering or messing up Singapore's cleanness. But there are still some areas that are still dirty, I could say.

Spore is so clean?? Wait till you see some of the sites around some Housing Estates (some areas).

Japan is the cleanest place I've ever been to in my life. Most of their places were clean & properly swept and kept not just relying on their cleaners but also everyone else (though not really everyone).

And they don't have corrective work orders to threaten their people to do that.

I think it may be connect with economy!

Mutual Aid
Litter laws.

Frankly I agree with fining litter louts, but I wonder if the parts away from the inner city are so clean. As long as their is decent policy for getting rid of ruubish, it's okay.

The best thing any country can do is cut its consumption of throwaway goods and of paper and plastic and then litter wouldn't be such a problem.

Nameless
Because their are harsh punishments for spitting chewing gum and falirue to flush public toilets ect.

Nathan R
Littering is punishable by death. So beware....

ShyGuy
..coz the cleaners work very hard...

Girlz
No one messes it up. NO ONE DARES!
It's just like my new school, because it's clean, people help it be even cleaner. Then same people in my old school, looked and lived it a messy school, and helped it be even messier.
People just follow the gang.

liza
it's the law. EVERYTHING is against the law. but it is a nice place

nick.
'cause it's not dirty.

Prophet 1102
Because they have very strict litter laws - including can't chew gum.

I found it to be overly sterile - not an interesting place at all to visit.

Strict laws that prohibit littering of any sort. I remember a story once that a foreigner once spat on the ground and in return got a beating of some sort. So research the country's laws before traveling!!!!
