Most parents wouldn't dream of giving their kids a mug of coffee, but might routinely serve soft drinks containing caffeine. Foods and drinks with caffeine are everywhere, it's wise to keep caffeine consumption to a minimum, especially in younger kids.
Coffee has 8x more caffeine than Coca-cola. Caffeine is defined as a drug because it stimulates the central nervous system. At lower levels, it can make people feel more alert and energetic.
Especially in young kids, it doesn't take a lot of caffeine to produce these effects.
* Consuming one 12-ounce (355-milliliter) sweetened soft drink per day increases a child's risk of obesity by 60%.
* kids who fill up on them don't get the vitamins and minerals they need from healthy sources, putting them at risk for nutritional deficiencies.
* Drinking too many sweetened caffeinated drinks could lead to dental cavities (or caries) from the high sugar content and the erosion of tooth enamel from acidity.
* Caffeine is a diuretic that causes the body to eliminate water (through urinating), which may contribute to dehydration.
* Abruptly stopping caffeine may cause withdrawal symptoms (headaches, muscle aches, temporary depression, and irritability), especially for those who are used to consuming a lot.
* Caffeine can aggravate heart problems or nervous disorders, and some kids may not be aware that they're at risk.
One thing that caffeine doesn't do is stunt growth. Although scientists once worried that caffeine could hinder growth, this isn't supported by research. |

caffeine is addictive and too much coffee ain't good for you.
I started the caffeine habit in college after needing to stay up to study and do projects and essays and a lot of mini-thesis. |

its just a throw back to older times. it doesnt make much sense for it to be considered such anymore when you could just go and buy an energy drink from the corner store that has way more caffeine and other assorted stimulants. |

Nonsense... I had coffee at 6 years old, but being during the war, most of the time was roasted acorns and chicory. |

Because it's for working people or college/university students who lack of sleep.
If you are in high school and lack of sleep, it's likely because you play too much games. |

I guess because of its caffeine content, same as chocolate - products put milk on it for children, while adults like the 70=80% pure. |

coz it's habit-forming and kids don't need to take on bad habits so early. when you're an adult, you are more disciplined and you can better control your coffee intake. |

I don't know exactly why that is and truthfully I don't think she knew either (I'd ask my mother and she'd give me a because answer). My 3 year old niece drinks coffee with milk because she sees her parents drinking and they give it to her. She is fine, not my child to decide what is right and wrong. The only reason I'd think it'd be a problem would be the caffeine. |

Well my family never considered it for adults only. Maybe some people do because it has caffeine, and too much caffeine for children can be bad, and make them very hyper. I think I had my first when I was 10 or so years old with milk and sugar though, coz I didn't like the taste of it without it |

I was about 32. Never cared for it before then..
I was working long nights and needed a kick, tried it and ended up hooked. I have my two to three cups when I wake up, but pass that and I don't sleep. Get irritable.
People like to practice do as I say not as I do.
They think that will stop their kids from trying.
One cup of coffee increases the overall metabolism by about 30% depending on strength and size..Effects the liver , kidneys , bladder and increases blood pressure and heart rate. Not good.
It is somewhat addictive. Not good for you even when grown. Please don't give it to children. |

I've had my first coffee in like 8th grade I guess.
I don't understand either. My parents never want me to drink alot of coffee so I just drink one cup like every 3 months its so unfair.
Just be careful not to drink to much.
It might stain your teeth and you might get addicted to it. |

Coffee is for Ma and Pa
To keep them awake at night
wonder.. wonder, they are up for what?
Milk is for the Baby
so white so pure
To make him sleep soundly
and not to have the slightest idea
at six months old
Why Ma and Pa's bed
tremor, quiever, shiver like an earthquake
Hope my poem answers your question. |
