Admittedly, prostitution is so prevalent in the Philippines. A lot of women (and men, and boys and girls) are for hire for a quick buck. And the most common excuse from these people is that they have not been succesfull in finding a job that will pay well, enough to help support the family.
These prostitutes are, generally, victims. For who in her/his right mind would want to be used by anyone with money? Filipinos are generally intelligent and God-fearing, so they would not normally allow this assault on their body to happen.
That prostitutes are generally forced into it is proven by the fact that prostitution thrives in very poor countries. regardless of religion. Look at India. Thailand. The impoverished nations formerly part of the USSR. Different geographies. Different cultures. Different religions. The common thread is poverty.
Of course, let it not be said that prostitution is not present in the first world countries. But then again, it is also the marginalized members of these rich societies that are in this trade.
ADD:
I take offence at the other answerer RAMON L.
This forum allows us all to present our points of view. It is not correct for anyone to trash the answers of people who happen to have a POV different from his.
I talk about respect. You may be the most intelligent person on earth but if you do not have respect for other people's opinions, I am sorry but your hubris will not take you anywhere. Such a pity, because I opened your profile and I must say I was impressed with your answers. However, you just lost my respect.
The question is about prostitution. It was not asking for a dissertation on economic performance. Yes, you can use that as a set-up, but you must address the issue raised, whether you agree with the asker's premise or not. However, RAMON L chose to sweep the issue under the rug. Any country, developed or developing, needs to deal with these problems. It doesn't go away just because our economy is now much improved from decades ago. That is not even being questioned, nor debated.
You can argue with the asker, but you must respect the opinions of the other answerers. God did not send you to Yahoo to judge us all, no matter how intelligent you imagine yourself to be. |

Prostitution is everywhere... and the word "prostitution" differs the way people see it.
Just the uneducated person and the close minded people who view prostitution happening only in the third world countries like the Philippines...
Edit:
Well done, Aref H4.... cheers! |

Answer me first, IS IT ONLY IN THE PHILIPPINES?
Here, it's illegal...it's just that, the government lacks in hands-on activities to eliminate prostitution.
In other countries, it's legal. Some have even proposed laws to make prostitution legal.
It's not only in the Philippines and it's not just because of poverty. It's also the choice of the person. |

maybe because of poverty, some are psychological problem, maybe a bad experience, but hey open your eyes, prostitutes are scattered all over in the world and it is rampant on other countries even at a highly industrialized countries. |

Prostitution exist all over the world and much much more
prevalent and open in other countries. Try to go to other countries and see for yourself.Perhaps you only traveled
here and nowhere else so you don't have the comparison needed to arrive to an educated conclusion. Please try to educate yourself more.
Postscript.

Quit picking on the Philippines and get a life. We're not as poor and destitute as what your western media portrays us to be.
The World Bank recently ranked us as the 24th largest economy according to purchasing power parity. The World Bank also said that we're the fastest-growing economy in Southeast Asia posting a GDP growth rate of 7.5% in the second quarter of 2007 (matching the economy of India in terms of sudden and rapid growth).
A Goldman Sachs study in 2005 also designated the Philippines as one of the N-11(Next Eleven) countries that will rise after BRICs(Brazil, Russia, India, China).
In terms of prostitution, did you know that more Eastern European women (Ukraine, Russia, Moldova etc) are trafficked than Filipinas? Go look at the brothels in Amsterdam, Dubai and Vladivostok. Take your hard-on elsewhere.
I have a few words for the rest of you who answered -
To those with a "victim mentality" who keep saying we're poor blah blah blah - get over it. It's annoying. The Philippines that existed 20 years ago is different from what is emerging today and what we will see in the next century. Your negative attitude does more harm than good. You can either help or get the hell out.
To those who b*tch about politcs and the political system, I'll tell you something - For a country that's been around for just 50 years (1946 onwards - 1898 does not count) our track
record is rather good. Most Western Euro countries have been around for 200-300 years and comparing us to them is idiotic. It's just like comparing an adolescent to an adult (who's been around longer). I'm sure they also experienced some crappy circumstances during their first 50 years.
To those who keep on sputtering that old tired "USA colonial mentality" cr*p - it DOESN'T APPLY ANYMORE!You are no longer in touch with reality.Enter any store and look where
most of the stuff sold here is made - it's either local or made in China. Duh!?
To those foreigners who have a hard-on on looking down on other countries - STFU. Do more research before you say something ignorant and idiotic. Asia is rising in the next century and we'll overtake you eventually. Consider yourself PWNED within the next 200 years.
Oh yeah, I consider Fil-Am/Am-Fil as foreigners. Dear Fil-Am/Am-Fil, if you like to badmouth my country pleeeeeeeaaaase stay away. You're not welcome here. We Filipinos like to eat bannanas and coconuts, not talk to them. |

Not only in the Philippines but elsewhere in the world. It's the oldest profession in the world so, basically, it's present everywhere. Where there's too much poverty, there is prostitution. |

i dont know. I have yet to avail of their services in what over, 25 years.
how did you ever know that they have so many there?
did you get turned down by your street corner service provider?
cmon man, every major city on earth have one in almost every street corner. & the reasons are as varied as their different personalities & conditions.
to Ramon L up there, 2 thumbs up! |

just the same with other countries...
the only difference is it's not legal in the philippines. say for example in thailand and others parts of greece, prostitution is legal so it's not really a big deal. prostitutes pay taxes like office people, so they have their sense of pride, knowing they ocntribute to the economy.
if you are a keen and wise observer, you would realize it's not a big deal. focus your eyes on other countries, you might be surprised how more rampant prostitution is than in the philippines. |

money talks. You don't have - someone else does - got to figure out how to get it. Sadly, too many woman think being a prostitute is the way to get the money. I think it just shows low self esteem by both the buyer and the seller. |

I know of no "prositution" in the Philippines or elsewhere. It is not even in the dictionary.
And why do you spell my country with a double "n" at the end?
And why do you simply repeat your question as additional details?
There is a word, however, which is "Prosit!" Perhaps, it is the root word of this enigmatic phrase you are coining "prositution", or to toast askers like yourself. And I should prefer you well done.
"Prosit!" And with this, I shall drink away all the pains in the world, which I get from answering pain in the as@ questions like this!!! |
