The complete name of the Philippines is "Republic of the Philippines." "The Philippines" was derived from its more complete name, "The Philippine Islands".

Very simple. There are those who would like to pretend they are the Philippines, when they are not. It is to protect the turf, make it unique. So many would like to usurp the title, but there is only one Philippines.
