I admire your frankness, but that's also your downfall. And your downfall was that you expected the Philippines to be like the United States. The best way to enjoy travel to a foreign country is to accept things as they are there, not what you want them to be. |

It is what happens when there is a weak goverment in place and the
people don't work together. Poverty is the big thing here. No new business will come to the area because they cant count on the stabilty needed to invest there. |

the war didn't do anything to help matters (WWII). Also, the rampant widespread corruption of the rulers in the PI has led to a few people getting rich from the govt coffers while the people languish in squalor. |

its because its a poor country, that's why it's considered a third world country... and maybe the wars havent help either xx |

Finally!!!! Someone gets it! I wish I can give YOU the 10pts!!! I infinity 100% agree with every word, letter, and sentence you wrote. I've been writing similar statements on here and all they do is get upset with me especially their little "club" called YAPPERS. Don't worry they know me on here. But great job on speaking your mind. What these people don't realize is we are not insulting them nor the country. We are helping them recognize what is happening with the Philippines. They need to realize and to open their eyes and see that they need to do something about the Philippines. The government for years doesn't even care about their country. I could go on and on and I have. But any ways great question!!! |

Besides the "unbearable heat" you allude to, every other dysfunction you noticed on your visit there is man-made.
It is broken fundamentally because most pinoys, perhaps me included, do not feel the need give enough of ourselves to contribute back to the society.
Most would rather flee to other countries, some somehow don't mind the suffering they see and experience, others are in abject denial over the reality and see right past it--and the rest proactively destroy it by robbing its national coffers and resources as leaders of industry and government.
The bottom line is that, regardless of all the nationalistic "I am proud to be pinoy" rhetoric which I endlessly have to listen to, few pinoys really associate themselves as true Filipinos who are willing to give back to it befeft of personal gain.
That's the honest truth, believe it or not. Take it or leave it but don't discount it. |

because good people like your forefathers left the Philippines to cultivate themselves to riches in other countries and never thought of improving the Philippines unlike the forefathers of the Americans who have sacrificed lives in defense of their rights , liberty, fraternity, and justice thus have this great nation of the United States as it is now. |

Coz we ghetto like dat!
The coutnry looks like a giant ghetto but still, the people are actually nicer and dependable than most Americans. So only thing I can tell you is that don't be hatin and don't EVER impose this on any Filipino coz we're so full of it that we just might pop you in the face.
Yea you can say I don't have the right to say that coz I live in the US, but just to let you know honey, I'm more than willing to come home anytime. |

Coz it's a third world country compared to US which is one of the richest countries. I'd agree it looks like the slumps but I think its a lot better than other third world countries though.
Were those (Manila & Taytay) the only places you've been to? Coz where I grew up (Baguio), the weather wasn't as bad and so are other mountainous places in the Philippines.
Oh and you can also blame a "disease" called "crab mentality" which affects both the rich & the poor as a cause of poverty. |

There is some truth to what you have witnessed. Please don't forget the blessings in your life. Please thank God for your good fortune. Anyone of us could have been born into extreme poverty. When you see small children of very poor families, always remember that they did not ask anyone to come into this world. I see them as innocent souls given life not knowing the disadvantages and struggles that will be placed upon their shoulders in years to come.
You should be thankful of the sperm that landed and created you at a time when your parents had a chance to open doors for you.
The doors were closed for many families who had the same dreams and desires for their children. The children who are now your age is living in extreme poverty probably sleep often to wash away the hunger and craving for food. The poverty you see in Philippines is not caused by the poor. Being poor with limited resources and knowledge can turn anyone over into a reprobated mind. I hope you can get on your knees just as I do and humbly thank God for your blessings. |

The oppressive heat may be the cause. It tends to sap one's ambition. The native way of life is probably typical Pacific Islander laid back, and civilization puts too many demands on people in that tropical climate. Spain should have left the Philippines alone, in which case the people today would be living in grass huts, spear fishing, eating coconuts, and generally happy. |

For your information, Philippines was once considered as one of the richest countries in Asia during the Quezon era. After he was overthrown, everything simply went downhill from there. Most of the presidents after Quezon have not done anything to improve the country. Cory Aquino took most of the money of the people and used it for herself. Now, Macapagal is making it worse. |

I recommend you to read this:
http://opinion.inquirer.net/inquireropinion/columns/view/20071229-109333/Rizals_Indolence_of_the_Filipinos
I quote what Mr. Randy David said: "...lack of discipline (that) is blamed for the Filipino’s lack of progress." I hope this ultimately answers your question.
If we look deeper into this problem, we can formulate another question.
Have I done something good for my country?
Now you know the answer to your question. I assume you also know there is something ought to be pondered more. |

With an average of 28 typhoons a year, occasional earthquake, volcanic eruptions, floods, landslides the Filipinos became resilient and can stand any calamities they face. We are carefree and happy people and we always thank God for the blessings He has given us. |

Why is it so broken, CORRUPTION at every level of Government.
All of the Philippines is not like you describe. There are nice areas if you take the time to look for them down here in the Visayas. |

the person that posted the original question wasnt comparing the philippines to america. the person was comparing the philippines to a garbage dump and an american ghetto. those that are saying the problem is simply because you are comparing the philippines to the usa simply dont understand the statement being made here.
yes, the philippines is a 3rd world country. yes it looks like a garbage dump. the reason it looks like a dump is not because it is a 3rd world country. there are plenty of third world countries that do NOT look like a dump. the reason the philippines looks like a dump is because of filipinos. sorry, but all you filipinos have nobody to blame but yourself.
take a look around you. look at how many people drop trash in the street while they are walking. look at all the guys and the girls spitting everywhere. look at all the guys that just pee wherever they damn well please.
the government is corrupt. who is to blame for that? filipinos. its your government.
until filipinos take responsibility for their own country the situation will not improve. unfortunately, anyone with any brains and some money escapes the country as soon as they can. the government encourages this.
the simple answer to the question asked... "why is the homeland of my ancestors so broken?" is "because of your ancestors descendants" |

what you say is true but you have exaggerated it. you saw few places and already you concluded the entire country is a big dump. is that fair?
we know what is wrong with our country and some of us are doing something about it. instead of knocking us all down, why can't you commend us for some improvements we have done and continue to do? |

well, the phillipines is a third world country... that's kind of what you expect, and it's horrible. i hope to help out one day.
but calling the entire phillipines 'ghetto' is absolutely ridiculous! i, myself, am a filipina-american, and have visited the phillipines. i loved it! some of the scenes are breathtaking... bohol, boracay, makati - it's like a nature-lover's-beach-bum's-party-goer dream.
although i will admit the heat is a little crazy (but i live in so cal, so, i'm a little used to heat) and the slums are horrible (the rich get richer and the poor get poorer), the phillipines as a whole is a beautiful country, and the people are beautiful as well. i'm proud to be a filipino.
it all depends on your perspective. |

Poverty has hit us very badly. Our leaders had betrayed us from the time of Emilio Aguinaldo to Manuel Quezon to Ferdinand Marcos to Cory Aquino to Fidel Ramos to Gloria Macapagal Arroyo.
Our people are mal-educated. Jobs are measly. Education is reserved to the rich and the affluent Chinese. The marginalized sector is in very bad shaped. Your description is precise--worse than the Negro ghetto.
Our Christianity and religious leanings has worsen the belief that poverty is God-given. The priest and the Catholic church perpetuated the mass agony and decline.
We lost the war with Spain, we lost the war with the Japanese, we lost the war with the Americans. Now we are running out bullets--we are at war with the Muslims.
Our last hope are the children said Dr Jose Rizal. But those children had come and grown and died. Change is yet in sight. Or never there shall be one. We are like Fidel Castro's Cuba and the English colony ion Africa and Mongolia. |

of course you cannot compare the worst of usa to the Philippines
america is the richest country and i can tell your not proud to be filipino coz it sounds like you are very angry to the philippines and that GIANT GHETTO you are calling is where you came from coz without that GHETTO ur parents or relatives wont be there and without them ur not there in America...
and to your other questions ask the government of the Philippines.!
and not the whole Philippines is a ghetto...
even though im already here in the uk
i still want to come back to the
philippines... |

Depends on the place.
Eastwood City, Makati City, Rockwell, Ortigas Center, Alabang Center, and the Fort are definitely not "ghetto".
Most American travelers from the US actually say that Manila is way inviting and beautiful than LA (they are referring to Makati and other places I've mentioned). |

i'll have to refute some of your claims:
1. the unbearable heat is due to the fact that the country lies in the tropics
2. squatters are not everywhere the eyes can see
you shouldn't have had expectations to see the same things you are used to in the us. the philippines is a tropical country. what works there will always have different results here. so many people have tried to do that. the better places in the country are patterned after western cultures anyway. they seem to be a bit alienated.
it is insane and "painful". except for the climate, everything you complain about is caused by poverty. AW has some good observations.
self-serving leaders and 400+ years of being under colonial rule that resulted in our ancestors to fight for scraps and leftovers that was theirs, and ours, to begin with. it seems that the filipino is not sure of his own identity. his cultures and way of life were reprogrammed by the spaniards and the americans through pacification. the cultures of the two peoples will never be effective here. so that when they finally left, bringing with them everything that they have, the filipino had nothing to begin with. |
|

Zhiboleth

I agree with all of your observations, but these observations were made within a limited time period and locations. So this would be unfair to places in our country which are completely opposite to what you have observed.
But then again, we are a Third World country. Not just any ordinary Third World country. Picture this: Take the population of California, Texas, and New York states and squeeze it into the state of Arizona. Then divide Arizona into 7,000 big, medium, and small pieces. And then imagine after each Presidential election we're suppose to put a welcoming banner at the airport that says: "Welcome to the Philippines, Under New Mismanagement." |

Yes what you wrote is all perfectly true that the Philippines:
1. looks like a horrid garbage dump
2. with unbearable heat
3. squatters everywhere
4. trash everywhere
5. beggars everywhere
6.people with no shoes
7.houses made out stuff from junkyard
8. GIANT GHETTO
the big question now is not whether the homeland of your ancestor is so broken but...now that you know the sickness of this forsaken country what are you planning to do?
I am Filipino and the answer to our question is because of US FILIPINOS why i say this because we have all at contributed an amount of that garbage, an amount of dishonesty, we all don't do our part. It is not just the governments fault why the country is like this.
See many of us knows the problem and the solution but only a few are acting upon it all we do are talk...I know and i can say that all the time I AM A PART of the problem but sometimes i am a little bit part of the solution |
