Just like not everyone in class could be valedictorian. Or like how there is only one first prize.
We are a young country, and we are still sorting out our politics, which is always a major hindrance to economic growth.
But then again, Thailand is also not yet a first world country. Indonesia. Malaysia. For that matter, only Singapore, Japan, and Australia, in this region could pass the "first-world" criteria. |

Because of ignorance of the masa, the huge amounts of plunder by former officials, corruption of current elected and public officials, passiveness of the middle class, refusal to pay the right taxes by the upper class and everyone who thinks bending the rule(s) is OK as long as bending it favors them. |

It was a premier nation in the 1960's. In fact at that time many Filipino's would go to America and return. The exchange was 2 pesos to the dollar. Manila was the crown of Asia, had the best and the greatest for others to admire.
The biggest problem continues to be corruption, it's what keeps the rich in the Philippines from being really truly rich, and its what keep the Philippines behind in the world. The Philippines has a badly outdated highway system, and needs better pollution and regulatory oversight over the environment. |

Coz of corruption, and politicians don't have the monopoly of this enterprise. Corrupt public workers can be found among workers holding the lowest clerical jobs to the supervisors to the managers of all levels. That is the "SOP". Your paper will not move to the next table unless you fork-over the SOP. Dishonesty has become SOP in all levels of government offices. Of course the people doing this big time are these in government who handles "public biddings" for big contracts.. |

To much changing hands of conquerors, First you had the spanish, then the americans, then Japanese and the Americans came back to kick the Japanese out and destroyed most of Manila doing so. So yeah Philippines has had alot of bad luck but all those events have made the people who they are today and that in itself is probably worth all that misfortune. |

there are plenty of reasons why Philippines is not a first-world country... one of them, is that of too many corruptions are going on in the government... another one is that, lack of self-discipline... if we have that, do you think Manila and other major cities wouldn't be polluted, too populated, and all... another one is that of 'colonial mentality' and superstitious beliefs... colonial mentality... why do many Filipinos want to have fair or white skin? it's just a waste of money, time, energy, etc... many or some, until these days, still believe superstitious beliefs... that's why we are not that successful... there are lots of 'not to do' things, even though there are no observable, empirical and measurable evidences subject to specific principles of reasoning... other reasons include: laziness, wars, misunderstandings, and many more... the geography of the Philippines itself tells you the answer why... scattered and too many storms!!! |

Because Filipinos like to get rich easily. An example is corruption and because many Filipinos have more time joining "Game Shows" rather than working hard for money. The proof is the Ultra stampede and the long lines on Lotto booth. |

because we only see the bad things, we ignore the good ones.
our economy and currency was so stable this time. the peso was even acknowledge as the best performing currency in 2005.
we are now on the list of the 'next eleven' and recently declared 'newly industrialized country'. our economy in 2007 grew 7.5%, highest growth since the last two decades.
now, theres a tsismis that gloria is kurakot, and as usual we would then flood the streets and rally. and our economy would again go back to dust, and the cycle continues. sad... |

The Catholic Church of course. It is the no. 1 cause of poverty and corruption. Look it up, search for the cause of poverty in the Philippines.
“There once was a time when all people believed in God and the church ruled. This time was called the Dark Ages.”
~ Richard Lederer
That's almost where the Philippines is now, the dark ages.
“I am surrounded by priests who repeat incessantly that their kingdom is not of this world, and yet they lay their hands on everything they can get.”
~ Napoleon Bonaparte
And they still do lay their hands on everything they can get in the Philippines. |
