It is still a great country in spite of everything (especially corruptions.) Yeah, aside from travelling to the 7,107 islands in the Philippines you will experience the unique charm of my historic land. People are naturally warm, friendly and hospitable.
My country is rich of culture & history, then you will discover more pristine white beaches, rainforests, mangroves, corals, marine sanctuaries & so much more. Then the Philippines is the world's third largest English-speaking country after the UK & the US then Philippines is the largest Christian country in Asia....
It means we're not that poor coz we can buys stuffs like expensive and branded mobile phones and even cars.
Be jealous.......... be very jealous. lol <*-*> |

hmmmm, great! Is this some kind of an insult?
Let's start:
46-100 kids in a classroom. -Isn't it obvious that Filipinos are well educated even we are poor? We earned our bachelor degrees through hardship.
Poor people have expensive cell phones. -And so? If we can afford to buy expensive cell phones, does it affects you?
Maybe yes if we will talk about the CONTRIBUTION of the Filipino people to your country.
Where are your list? It will be fun to read those so that I can explain you why, what, and how. In the end you will find out it is not the Philippines or the Filipinos who have problems. |

LOL....so your griping because were blessed? Shouldn't all country's strive to reach a socioeconomic level were there poor are considered wealthy in 3rd world standards? So maybe your question would be better worded..what can I do to help my country reach higher goals instead of insisting on downing us for prosperity? |

Hmmm...........I never taught that my country is show off, until you said it.
But hey aren't we all show offs, whatever country you came from my dear your blind and also very stupid to just target my country.
Everywhere in the world everyone is doing something to hide their problem, if you think that cellphones or what ever latest gadgets there is are our way to hide the problems then so be it.
So here is a good advise "MIND YOUR OWN COUNTRY" |

Hey whats with you?Having the finer things in life means a show off? Maybe those are just self incentives, a gift to oneself even if it means forsaking some things in order to buy the thing. Are we not entitled to own what gives us joy in life?Perhaps you have an ailment, its called ethnocentrism. |

yo juiceman, our country is a "show-off" because we have so much to be proud of...much more than the petty reasons you cited. and no, i'm not angry at you. after all, you are entitled to your opinions and beliefs.
btw, there's a lot of people here at yaphils who could help you with that simple physics problem of yours...i just don't know if they will considering your "offish" attitude. |

We have the right to be a show-off. I bet your own country hired Filipino workers. You should ask your friend why foreign companies hired employees from here.
If your friend can't answer that, I'll tell you why. It's because Filipinos are know to for their hard work and concern for their clients. Why do you think the US of A prefers to hire Filipino nurses? So you see..we have the right to show off what we have.
Maybe you're just jealous that poor Filipinos have better cellphones than you do. At least, we Filipinos try to go to school everyday. I bet we have a higher literacy rate compared to your country. |

What country are you talking about? I already know you hate America, hate Christianity, hate the military and love radical islam. So I'm guessing that since this is in YAP, you hate the Philippines, too? If so, that's cool - considering the scource.
So all you Philippinos out there: Don't fret... Your in some pretty good hated company. It is sometimes desirable to be hated. It means you are doing something right. Just look at Juices answer history to see what I mean and bask in the glory that a true rat seems to hate you. Congratulations... You must be doing something right. |

1. A new gadget is always interesting. Being very close to the manufacturers of electronics (Japan, China, Korea), the Philippines is able to acquire new items quickly.
2. Filipinos value communication. Some family members/ friends may be far away (in another country, for example) and they wish to be accessible to them.
3. Simply because the Philippines belong in the Third World does not mean that the people has no means to afford their lifestyle. |

Behavioral scientist call it poor self esteem.Because in the philippines, when one is not materially successful, nobody cares for you, or they termed you as miser as you do not intend to share your harvest or good fortune. Most judged others by the "cover of the book". So one needs to show off to appear confident, with power,to be socially acceptable. So many filipinos have state of the art cellphones, but visit their homes, short for a rat hole, or their credit is so high. Many prefer to have their women whore themselves so that they may get material supplies , but when this women can't give their wants, hell, what bad words can be heard, even animals won't be able to stomach it.Just give them back home their wimps and you're greater than any saints or god.
To be fair with the filipinos, not all are like that. Many are still spiritual individuals, will return what they found from lost or items left, be it a huge amount. And not only in the philippines are there some show-offs, many culture in any part of the world are morally loose too.
Are you an american? If so, ain't your government the greatest show off too? How many billions of dollars does your government owe? And yet you like to "police" the world, are you helping or are you making some extortions? |

Sorry, but I have to correct your misconception of our country. Our country, per se, is not a show off. If you mean its people, yes, some are show offs. You cannot distinguish the poor and the average because they look alike. Yes, it's true that almost everyone from the poor sector carries cellphones, others the expensive brands. It's in their mentality, you see, never mind if there is not enough money for food and for some other basic necessities, what is more important is to have money to buy expensive clothes or things that people can readily see and praise you for such expensive tastes. I don't want to look down on my own kind but even I cannot fathom this kind of attitude. |

just like the people.
This drain is robbing the economy of the precious educated middle class, leaving only the hapless poor and the theiving rich LIKE ME --and pushing the country ever closer to economic collapse.
I spent about $2.8M into the Philippines in 2006 and a little bit more by the end of this year, by way of programs and projects in education and healthcare. i indeed do work for those noble causes. it does make me noble--but it sure feels good. you should try it sometime. |

just because filipinos enjoy the finer things in life, doesn't mean we are showing off. and what the h3ll are you griping about, it's not like other countries are perfect. and judging from the stuff you write in y! answers, you hate everything anyway.
why don't you go use your hatred in something more productive... like maybe killing yourself? what we do with our own money is none of your business. if you don't like it, deal with it. a$shole. |

As majority of the answers here show, filippinos cannot take criticism.
I agree with josie p.
Entire metro manila area is consumed with pursuit of hedonistic pleasures materialism and conspicuous consumption. The society is corrupt and decedant, and no one have the gumption to admit it. And every one thinks that the community and society and the country is doing fine.
Crime is one of the good barometers of the decay in the society.
Look at the amount of crime in that place.Materialistic tendencies promote crime and corruption.
What these kids need is palo not cell phones ,
I blame their upbringing for the pitiable situation |

There was a poor Filipino, who absolutely couldn't live without a cellphone. So he stole mine while I was riding on a jeepney.
Another poor Filipino stole my wallet, also on a jeepney, some months earlier. I wonder what he is going to do with it. Only 2 photos in it and some change, I guess 15 pesos.
That is the way SOME poor Filipinos get their cellphone.
So, now I don't buy a new cellphone. I can live without one. And I only take 14 pesos with me, when riding a jeep.
Of course, most Filipinos are nice and honest...it's the few bad apples that make that tourists prefer going to Thailand to spend their holidays (and their money). |
