hello, m'am. oh please, since you did say you're an activist, activate this whole idea of our country becoming the 51st state of america. america will save us from ourselves. they gave us english, hawaii five-o, and charlie's angels. not to mention, our penchant for anything 'blusil.' we're always trying to ape them anyway, so why not become one of them? i dearly hope so! instead of living in the slums, i will finally realize my dream of living in a tenement, with running water and an anidoro to squat on. toilet paper too! how wonderful it would be to be an american. m'am, where can i sign the petition? salamat po! |

Hmmmm. I can see your point there. But allow me to express my view on that.
NO I don't believe that it would be better for the philippines if it became the 51st state (not that it would ever happen). First of all what do you mean the US taught us? What did they teach? The US did bring some of their culture to the Philippines but it was us that decided to adapt that into our culture. It is not their fault that the Philippine gov't is corrupt. Philippines needs to stop pointing fingers and start fixing the problem.
Through out Philippine history we have always fought for our independence. To have our own identity. Why would you want to be part of america? Have faith in your fellow filipinos.
Don't get me wrong, I am an american citizen. Damn proud to be one too. America has their own problems and Philippines has theirs. Let's not merge them and make a bigger problem. |

NO what planet are you living on? Why are Philippines so obsessed with the US? If the government would stop wasting money on whatever it is wasting it on and actually develop some sustainable industries this will create more employment and income for the country. The USA is not going to do anything to better the Philippines they are only going to steal the natural reasources to better themselves, do you know how much debt the US is in from the war? It is alot they do not have enough money to make the philippines a better place. |

I am not a Filipino but in my very humble opinion, if I were one, I would not like to ask another country to "adopt" me. I would do everything to develop my own country because of something that I call national dignity. Other countries, like Thailand or Cambodia or VN also have their own share of problems but they will die for their country and would be too proud to ask for something like this. It would be very humiliating and a big shame for them.
In the family of nations on planet earth they respect those who are strong, independent and who can stand on their own two feet.
Also, with 89,000,000 people and counting, most of whom are poor, it would be a disaster for the US job market. Do you think Americans will want so many new workers to compete with them?
But most importantly, if this ever happens you will lose your most precious qualities- friendliness and your good family values and replace them with the love for the almighty dollar.
I have seen stateside Filipinos change and lose the beauty of their character, become arriogant, sarcastic, cynical, mistrustful. They make dollars but it looks like they have sold their soul to the devil. Many also learn about racism and that they are now "Asians" and they start hating other races The biggest mistake is that they think that because the US is financially superior, that it is also culturally superior. But I think that culturally the Philippines is far more superior than many other nations. You have so many things to be proud of.
And in closing I will paraphrase the famous proverb from teh Bible: For what would it profit a Filipino to gain the dollar, but lose his soul? |

You need to re-learn your history it was Spain (and the customs they brought with them)"NOT" the U.S. that was in the Philippines for so long teaching their ways to the People. But for the short time the U.S. was here, I think the Filipino has learned very quickly the ways of America. Buy the way what are you doing to give back to your home-land so far away? Don't you think your own Gov. and people living abroad have any responsibility? |

If there are more states, likely it'll be Puerto Rico and/or the Virgin Islands before the Philippines. |

There was some serious talk about possible statehood for the Philippines about some 30 or 40 years ago, and then it all sort of faded. Mostly because of the fact that there were too many Muslim rebels and a general lack of intrest on the part of the Marcos regime. It would have prevented them for getting richer at the expense of people, and as long as the U.S. had bases there, who needed statehood? |

well, looking at the sad state of affairs of this once great nation, i would be inclined to agree with the pioneers of the statehood movement...
i am not about to diss the filipino people, but the promise of edsa 1 remains a promise... 3 administrations after marcos and poverty and corruption are its worst with no hope in sight...
the poverty gap gets wider by the day... the rich becomes filthy richer and the poor gets poorer and more children (ok, i made the last one up)...
it will really take a drastic change of mindset from the top down. perhaps the philippines will get better if everyone will start thinking about the next person rather than themselves only... |

No, the Philippines just needs to restructure their government
and get rid of the corruption, so that the money goes to help
the people.. instead of buying mansions, cars, etc.. for the
rich politicians. The U.S. is a super power but it is not the
best country in the world. It suffers from a lot of problems
The filipinos are poor but they have good moral and family
values, hospitality to others, etc.. many traits that seem to
be losing their importance in America as time goes by. |

Its an interesting thought. I'm an American, with Filipina fiance. Have been to the Philippines many times, and must say I LOVE IT THERE! Can't really compare it to Hawaii like one of the posters did, because there is actually an agreement with the 'King' of Hawaii on being a 'state'. They are, but is under a type of charter that was just renewed if I'm not mistaken. If it were that the Philippines were listed as a part of us, but also left to self govern themselves in part, maybe it wouldn't be a bad idea. But I would hate to see the USA take apart what the Philippines is. You really do have a beautiful country, and SHOULD be proud of it. I think all it takes is a little direction and you could be doing very good there. Look at some of the other countries, they are doing fine. Just takes teamwork on a country level :) Anyway, not that I thought was a good idea, just was 'interesting' as it might make traveling and staying between the two countries easier :D Take care all! |

I don't think so. We have our own style of living. We have our own culture. The thing is, most of us do not believe in what our country could be. Oh yeah, the politicians are now a headache too. But I still believe that we can make it, only if we are disciplined enough to try and make the most out of what we have. |

no, i dont think it would be better for the Philippines. We Filipinos just have to change our mentality. instead of blaming everything on the government, we should also do our part to change things for the better. [we could start this May by electing government officials who will serve our country and not themselves.] :P love for country, people!! :D |

No the Philippines is a sovereign nation. Even if that did happen , it would be decades before there was a total uplift to the filipino economic system. There would also be huge problems with the militants in the south. In theory it sounds great, but in reality it would be detromental to all for many years. |

it's so nice that you have to tell us that you are an activist and now having the good life in the US...thanks, but no thanks coz the philippines still can make it work...we dont need to be a state of another country to have a better life....no corruption and less people like you who think that depending on another to country can make it better is the answer...there are other ways man!!! |

But don t you see??This country is been the 51st state for so long already.
It s very sad to say, but I ve been travelling in many places and I ve never seen a people with such little pride.
Pinoys just eat, sleep and live USA.All their actions are guided by this country. It s so sad to see a country with no national identity.
People are proud to be pinoys a couple times a year when Pacquiao is fighting but that s it.
More and more people speak Taglish and soon Tagalog will be a dead language, but anyway who cares it s just so cool to speak english just like their masters.
And gosh what on earth is the US flag doing on 100 pesos bill??
I know the story, it s to illustrate independence blabla but the single presence of the US flag on a peso bill tells a lot about the situation here.
The worst is that very few people actually noticed that. |

For sure, we may be economically stable but we would all live in sunken grounds. Our grounds might as well ne under mining projects... Trees will be totally logged too. |

"every Pilipino will have a better life" - I don't think that will be the case. As it is, there are a lot of Americans who don't have a better way of life. Poverty exists everywhere even in the land of plenty. Look at the plight of so many Americans. Being an activist, I would hope you are more open to social conditions that exist beyond your backyard in the gated community or development where you live.
Putting the Philippines under any sovereign rule would disregard the deaths of so many Filipinos during the Philippine American war. True, we did surrender and it was the Americans who eventually gave us back our freedom but still, it was fought for and worked for.
We still have to let go of our slave mentality that serving a rich king is better than being free. |

Hahahaha! Will US risk the political catastrophe having Lito Lapid, Jinggoy Estrada et. al. in the US Senate then?
We don't have anymore the chance to get better? Well, if only you'll stop seeing the "ugliness" of Philippines and refrain from comparing it with the "beauty" of USA, perhaps we still have a chance to get better |

nope never we justneed to lessen our self interest and remove the collonial mentality of am better and ur not u shoulkd stay that way forever. our province would also become a mining field full of tunnels, open pit and bald mountains and where will all of us go if it become that way. |

I hate to say this in your face, but you are wrong. All we need are reforms but reforms are not easy to come because some vested interests are affected. Some people say, the people should first reform themselves. But this is easier said than done.
We only need to change our mentality. Our colonial mentality. |

Becoming part of the US would be the worst thing to happen to any nation. The USA is a hole and getting worse every day. The Philippines can only get better. |
