My friend's just come back from a round the world year trip on her own, and took in Thailand many times, as well as Cambodia and the Sudan. She absolutely loved every minute of it and said the people were amazing. She's 5 foot nothing by the way... So long as you plan what you're doing, you'll be fine.

fluffer

Definitely. There's people to do and things to see out there!;-)

Of course. I came here (Thailand) alone three years ago and I'm still here. Thailand is perfectly safe... a lot safer than many countries in the Western world. I've never had a single problem in three years of living here.

i was there when the coup happened and thanks to CNN it was all blown out of per portion. its a fabulous country to visit alone or other wise, so many backpackers you wont be on your own for long. as long as your sensible you'll be fine. you should go to the TAT I'll dig the e-mail address out tomorrow for you they are brilliant they'll tell you all you need to know....accommodation, places to visit, visa info they do the lot and they dont charge, if you go to them and book things 9 time out of 10 its cheaper.

NO, But if I spoke the language it would make the trip more fun for everyone that I go to Thailand.

EMAILSKIP
I'd only go alone or with somebody. Ya, I'd sure go alone...easy to meet people from all over the world.

Enlightenme!
I have gone for years solo, I prefer it this way because you could do whatever you feel (you do not have to comprimise with friends, family) and you can also meet other travelers wherever you travel in Thailand to keep you company.

Although, there is a new development with the Coup the government is anticipating that the former PM - Thaksin will attempt a confrontation with the new Government. So this may lead to bloodshed, here is the story, put out today (Wednesday, Oct 25, 2006):

I would advise to keep up with what is going on over here. Hopefully it will remain peaceful but you never know.

peanutz
Yes, definitely. Done this many times and now I have friends I can call on while I am there.

I am a male and have gone 9 times alone. No problem. Just be careful. Now I have friends there so it's not a problem also.

As a female, it is relatively safe, again just be careful. Lots of dark streets so stay away from them or take a taxi. Bangkok is one of the safest cities in the world. Outside of Bangkok, be careful. A single female who is not careful would be a target of slave traders to Laos, Cambodia, and India.

Alone? Why not. It is one of the safest countries in the world for a man or a woman!

Unless you have some moral/ethical reason for punishing the coup leaders (and I can understand why you might), there is absolutely no reason to avoid Thailand on political grounds.

As an expat who has lived in Thailand for 3 years, as much as I hate what it portends for long-term democracy here, I can say the coup has made not one iota of difference in daily life.

If you could punish the military and not the people by staying away, I'd be all for that choice. But, tourism is a major source of revenue here for a wonderful people. That's the bottom line.

Heck yes, and I have gone to Thailand alone. If you cant find a traveling partner to go with you go yourself. You will meet many, many people there who are traveling by themselves as well, and will not have a hard time meeting people. Plus traveling alone gives you the freedom to be spontaneous or create your own itinerary for what you hope to see and accomplish while there! Get a hotel room in Bangkok and decompress for a few days before you head out on your adventure! good luck

Yes, it is perfectly safe for anyone alone - but precautions should always be taken - that's true of even the US. Thai people keep to themselves and are very respectful of others. I had my expensive camera equipment in full view on crowded streets and nobody came close enough to be a threat. They were curious about the screen on the camera, but I never felt like anyone was about to rip it from me.

It is also the only country where not a single person asked me for money. Not a single beggar and I was there for 22 days.

Yes.
It is a beautiful and lovely country. I went last year with a girlfriend and we had a great time. We did stay in good hotels but at no time felt threatened or in danger.
If you behave as you would do to be safe anywhere else in the world, you will be safe in Thailand too.
As someone said to me in New York, when asked if it was safe in central park; it is as safe as any other city park. During the day, walk alone, at night it would be foolish, especially if you look like a tourist and are carrying lots of cash.

The people in Thailand are very polite, helpful and cheerful.
