Would you hire a child laborer to save that child from extreme poverty...? |
I am not advocating child labor and this question is not whether child labor is good or bad. I just like to read opinion/s on this:
Would you hire a child laborer to save him and his family from a life of extreme poverty, lack of education, and early marriage? |

This is a hard one. Then again, what sort of labor are we talking about here? How physically demanding is the job? If it is labor intensive and back breaking, I'm afraid, no is the answer.
However, certain jobs are more child-friendly with a bit life-enhancing in-built education thrown in.If children can learn something that can be of use later in life, and the job/project is run humanely with good care and consideration of their age, then it is better than living or dying in abject poverty. |

No.
Taking empathy into account, would you hire your own 10 yr old niece/nephew/cousin to do work for you? Unless the job is to critique video games all day, any decent person would vehemently answer "NO".
The right thing to do is to give him the money to send him to school. Work is something that any young child should never be allowed to put ahead of his education or his right to be just a child. |

i will hire a child to do things that he is capable for his age, like watering the plants or cleaning the yard, feeding the animals. not in jobs as in construction works, heavy lifting, sakada9cane field worker), work in the mines. |

Yes, I would. In fact, I did it so many times. It helped to bring food to their tables and bought the medicines a younger sibling badly needed. Likewise, it helped one mother to start a small sari-sari store in their pitiful house.
I would do it again if asked. |

I see a lot of good points of view on here
I'd here a child to do a child's work.
Sweep the yard, cut the grass, wash the car, all domestic chores that can be supervised and compensated for modestly.
Essentially charity, but a life lesson for the child if you like. I'm European and was a member of the scout movement - we did that kind of stuff to raise money for charity all the time as kids - i see no harm what so ever. |

No I would not. I would hire his/her parent(s) if they are qualified. There are many ways to help that child like donating to charitable organizations who help impoverished families. If I want to help this specific child then maybe I will spend for his/her welfare instead. There is also a program called foster parents where that child is "supported" by individuals abroad by means of monthly donations for the upkeep of the child. What's with the name if you don't mind? |

Tough question...
I suppose that would really depend on quite a few variables. Children work in the US all the time (think child actors). BUT there are various statutes and laws in place to ensure that the children are not only physically capable and have the permission of their parents, but that they are also psychologically/emotionally capable and that they are working in safe conditions and their education is maintained.
So I suppose there would be many things to consider.
I do see one flaw in the argument - why can't an adult from the family be hired to save them from extreme poverty, lack of education, and early marriage? Slave labor is slave labor whether it's a child or adult performing the task, but inherent hiring children for labor, regardless the argument, it would seem someone is trying to save a buck and it it all just circles around the end justifying the mean.
So, would I? No. |

and risk prosecution? no way! i'd rather adopt and educate them than be charged with child labor violation.
anyway, consider this - would you rather give 1 child a job or the parents? if you give the child a job, he'll be earning money for the family but if you give the parents a job, you'll be saving the family from hunger and that is, if the parents are responsible adults. there are many variables to be considered.
poverty in the philippines is common. how many can you save by hiring 1 child? how about if you hire his/her mom and/or dad, how many can you save? which is more efficient to hire, a child or an adult? as i said, there are many variables to be considered. |

there's nothing wrong in educating the youth on the value of money, neither it is unpleasant to instill a sense of responsibility on a child's mind...for education doesnt necessarily limit itself in teaching language proficiency and world history inside a classroom.
Offering summer jobs to students would be great, or delegating trivial tasks (sweeping the lawn, helping in the garden, etc.) to the younger ones on weekends.
I'd say i might be tempted, but not fervently implicated,.. because the set-up will definitely require laborious planning on the part of the employer, for the healthy normal growing up stages of the child (school and play) should, in no way, be jeopardized. Ei para kang nagte-train ng employee and nagyayaya at the same time..pero kung marami naman extra time ung employer to spare, then why not.. |

children in movies is example of child labor. if the child is not being abused then its okay to hire him to help. if child can do the work then its really okay. |

Maybe.
But not hard labor. Just a small amount of work, making him feel it is not alms. And it is a good training for him too, to value whatever he has earned through his perseverance.
Why? has anyone applied? can I? palimos po ;) |

it is a practice in the philippines.
remember your housemaid or errant boy who works for you.
they started working as minors, given by poor parents .
a portion of their pay taken by the parent at the end of the month to help pay house bills. |

If I can afford to hire him I can afford to send him to school. No labor required. |

maybe. We used to have a maid who was only sixteen. But then she only do a bit of housework like look after me ( when I was about 5), wash a few dishes and do some groceries and cook during weekdays. But at around 4pm in the afternoon my yaya goes to a nearby school. My mom enrolled her for some night classes. After 2 years, I think she finished a vocational course, she went abroad and married a German. :)
so i guess hire a child to do some child-friendly chores and send them to school or night school or even afternoon school. Let him/her study together with your children (of u have any) during free time. After all, you are going to treat him/her as your adopted child. and you are going to be like a second parent to them |
|

I lost my TC Badge >:))
 |
yes i would.
the thing is when people hire minors, they pay them meager salary.
we don't! we give what they are due- we give more - education, health, fun, and share Jesus
we do get teens not children as house helps. we don't hire people with young family. we would like them to nurse their babies rather than working for us. |

a child's only purpose in his early life is set in two points: to study and to play. it is not an easy yes or no. but this situation is leading up to another point and that is to help the parents, not just their child, get out of the mess that they created for themselves.
if i personally know the parents, i probably will. but it will largely rely on their ability to handle the money their child will receive |
