Avoid staying in Kings cross... people end up staying there fore months and they are the shittest hostels in AUS... people only drink and do dope.
Best move out of sydney asap...
but do visti the oxford tavern/rits in PETERSHAM, Purple line, few stops from central...

Oh and tips... dont book a lot of things to do in in sydney often cheaper when you get there.

The Sydney central hostel is graet, more like a 3 star hotel on some fllors. Right next to central station. Only one or to night stays is the problem. |

Definitely Manly on the north of Sydney harbour. It is clean, pretty and it is lovely to get a boat to work -no pollution and very quick There are buses and trains too but they take longer. The Manly Beach Resort is where I stayed. Kings Cross in the city is the red light area and there are hostels there. They are very squashed however and really better if staying just overnight. Bondi hostels are very poor value for money. Not a good place to stay at all. There is quite a big one in Glebe also, just outside the city. Good luck and have a good time there. |

In my experience, you won't go far wrong with an Hostelling International hostel http://www.hihostels.co.uk/. This is the brand name of the International Youth Hostel Federation (IYHF). Speak to the England & Wales YHA http://www.yha.org.uk/ before you leave.
Having said this, there are loads of hostels in Oz so once you're there, you'll find loads that are better and loads that are worse. |

Most definitely YHA Central in Rawson St or Railway Square YHA near platform 1.
There is also a large backpackers on the corner of George and Pitt St that looks ok from the outside but I haven't stayed there.
Best to start out close to Central station as that is where all the major buses and trains leave from.
The hostels above are only a few hundred metres away.
If you stay out at glebe or kings cross then you have to add train/bus fares to your daily expenses.
Long term I would suggest Dulwich Hill YHA if you are planning to work in Sydney |

Ya cant go wrong with manly... Sun surf and pubs.. Not to mention hot women.. There are a heap of hostels in manly. Right next to the beach too.. Sorry i dont know the name of any of them... |

I think you should stay in or close to the city, potts point (AKA Kings Cross) is the red-light district but it's central to everything and has several good hostels with ok prices; they're all similar so take your pick. If you're staying in Sydney city there is a cluster of places on Pitt St or you could go with a boarding house which is probably cheaper in the long run but not as socially oriented as a backpacker targeted hostel. I think you should stay in the city or immediate surrounding suburbs (pyrmont, glebe, newtown, kings cross, darlinghurst) because while bondi and manly are nice beaches they arent a patch on the real beaches out of the city. so while you're in sydney do city stuff, save the beach stuff for when you get to the regional areas. |

It depends on the area - my first choice would be Manly or Bondi which is near the beach - Manly is cleaner and full of backpackers from everywhere - Bondi is vibrant but a bit seedy.
Otherwise try something central, like Potts Point [ also seedy ] - but cheap. At least it will get you established.
Prices will depend on the season - Jan to April is fairly busy and more pricey. |

My first hostel to stay in was Surfside backpackers in Coogee, dont throw yourself in the deep end too early by staying in the city centre, enjoy the beach bum backpacker life for a while, its a short bus ride to the centre, its just south of Bondi (and a fantastic walk to it too), the hostel staff will help you find work when you need it and book you on some trips while you still have the money!! if you go on youtube and type in 'Coogee Surfside' you can have a look around inside it too. Coogee is great for the nightlife, good food, and to top it off the hostel is actually upstairs from McD's and opposite the beach!!
Take a taxi from the airport, cos the buses are a bit fiddly when youve just arrived.
As for second port of call....ask your fellow backpackers where theyve just come from/ heading to next, you never know you might even hitch a ride with them. |

Hi, you have plenty of good advice regarding hostels, I just wanted to make sure you are aware you need to apply for the visa. I used to process visas and a number of people left it till the last two or three weeks thinking it's similar to a tourist visa. If not no problem you can apply on-line at http://www.visabureau.com/australia/working-holiday-visa.aspx
Best of luck in Sydney but make sure you head to Melbourne (my favourite). |
