A question, for Australians or those who've been there...?

How do you pronounce the "Ayers" in Ayers Rock? Does it rhyme with "wires", or "layers"?

Thanks in advance for your responses...

Uluru now, huh? Interesting....and where does the accent go on that? Do you say "oo-LOO-roo", or "OO-loo-roo"?

If you want to say it like an Aussie, Uluru is 'ool-a-roo'.
Have a great time.

Scrad
It is "Airs" Rock, But yes the Rock has been given back to the Aboriginies and the have changed its name back to Ularu "Ewl-A-Roo" Have A nice time there

Wotan210
Most people pronounce it "Airs" Rock, but it's not called that anymore. It's been given back to the Aboriginies. It's now called Uluru. You pronounce that "ool-oo-roo"

Since the other answerer's have already solved the puzzle - here's another piece of information regarding the history in-and-around the 80's era. Do you recall the Azaria Chamberlain case? Where the dingo snatched the baby from a camp site?

And while we're on pronounciation, I'm going to address a few pet hates of mine.
Circular Quay = circular "key"
Brisbane = Bris-bin
Canberra = Can-bra
Thank you.

splitchick
Sounds a little like Air's Rock

Amanda P
It rhymes with layers, but you'll also hear it called the original aboriginal name "Uluru". The other big rock there is called Kata Tjuta (pronounced cat-a-chu-ta), which is also beautiful.

Currawong
You pronounce it "Airs" Rock, It's been given back to the Aborigines. It's now called Uluru.

Also Ayers Rock it is not the largest monolith in the world, the largest monolith is in Western Australia called Mount Augustus
