Virgin Blue is the most reliable and affordable domestically. For overseas, Qantas even though it is expensive is the most frequent. Tiger is up and coming while Jetstar is a big disappointment. |

Jetstar - portable tv units for hire at a cost of $10 - comfortable seats, cheap prices, offer 2-for-1 deals if you sign up to their website.
Virgin Blue - Offer Happy hour on their website, aircraft now have TV's in the back of the seats which at a cost of $10 you can watch foxtel, often have great specials and are widely advertised by www.holidayplanet.com.au They also have domestic lounges at the major airports around australia.
Tigerair - Have never travelled with them although they offer exceptionally low fares to Asian regions from Western Australia... Personally I would never use, because I question the $199 international specials, and whether this cheap fare has compromised on safety. (it most likely hasn't, just a personal fear!) Also, I hear that checked in luggage costs a fortune.
QANTAS - They own Jetstar, which offers cheaper airfare, so have yet to use. I have used for flying international, and their service was excellent - just expensive. And with all the recent media surrounding safety, I would shop around in future. They offer frequent flyer points though!! And corporate lounges at the airport!
Air travel: 3-4 times a year
Travelling: Business & leisure
Last travel: February 2009 - Melbourne - Leisure
Business person
Hope I've helped :) |

On February 13 I tried to book flights online with Tiger Airways. Three times the web page crashed as I entered my Visa card details. For three days I tried phoning the call/booking centre in Melbourne. 20 times I got the busy signal. Four times I actually got through but was disconnected whenever I pressed the number to speak to an operator. I sent three faxes as suggested on the website for problems but received no answer. Last night - 12 MARCH, I got two phone calls from two different Tiger employees asking me what my problem was and they were both velly solly but it was beyond their control!!
How on earth can a company operate like this?
Jetstar I love because they let me take goods to my Balinese villages without charging me excess baggage as it is charity. I always get lovely smiles and chats from the check in staff when they see my clearance. Last time it was six bags full of soccer gear we were taking.
Virgin Blue help is chaotic if you want to connect between Sydney International and the Domestic Terminal. They only help if you have come in on a Virgin flight and don't care if you may miss your connecting Virgin flight because you don't know how to transfer.
Jetstar for me all the time both International and Domestic.
As a retiree Qantas is too expensive for me. |

I fly with whichever is significantly cheaper, but if they are fairly similar I pick Qantas because you get a meal and I get points. When my kids are traveling too I prefer Virgin because they have the portable entertainment units for hire. I find the service at Qantas excellent.
37 y.o. fly around 3-5 times per year to visit family, holidays, or to attend conferences. Self-employed. |

I now prefer to fly with Virgin Blue
I like their price. I like the fact they now have connections all the way to my home town on the other side of the continent. I like the fact the staff don't bug me every five minutes with stuff I don't want or need. I used to fly with Qantas almost exclusively, but their maintenance standards have dropped enough for me to no longer fly with them with confidence. Price is important, but not that important that I can't go without some basic service. When Qantas brings its maintenance back to Australia then I will reconsider them. Until then I only fly Virgin Blue. I won't fly Jetstar for the same reasons I wont fly Qantas (they are after all the same company - except worse service). Not that it matters, Jetstar and Tiger don't fly where I want to go anyhow. My most important preference in any airline is that they get me there in one piece.
I am 41 years old. I fly at least once or twice a year from Sydney to Perth (and WA's northwest) to visit relatives and friends.
The last time I travelled was last Christmas for a big family christmas at my Nannas (she couldn't come to us due to her age, so we all came to her). I am not a backpacker/student/retired or a business person. I do hold down a full time job (a rarity in this day and age) which allows me to keep in touch with my far flung family littered around Australia.
Note: There is no "U" in Qantas, it is an acronym. |

Domestic travels more likely to be Virgin as they are often cheap, or Jetstar. I have never flown with Tiger Airways because they don't seem to have as many services. Also their web site was a bit suspicious. Sometimes I travel with Qantas if there are any benefits from doing so, occasionally they can be cheaper or more flexible and you can get FF points.
