My partner is aboriginal - and he doesn't get any handouts .... let alone too many, and has worked all his life, sometimes two jobs at a time.
we are both insulted. !!!
There are white people out there that are losers, drunks and stereotypes to you know - why pick on the aboriginals. |

I live in Perth WA. I use to catch the bus to work, and there would be aboriginal people getting on the bus at 8:30am with coke bottles filled with alcohol, smelling like they hadn't washed themselves or their clothes in about a month, and in some cases they would even sit up the back and sniff glue.
On benefits night (the night of the day they receive their benefits), they all hung out at the bus stop 15 metres away from my bedroom window. They would shout and scream at each other, more often than not get physical so that police had to be called. It was one of the reason I move house.
I was unemployed for about 2 months once. I had to go down to centrelink every fortnight and hand in a form. Everytime I was there the aboriginals would be asking for more money becuase their kids had no food. The parents had spent it all on alcohol.
I once went to a place called Ceduna. The pub had wrought iron fencing all around to keep them from breaking in at night.
And lets not forget to mention the aboriginal who took a pickaxe to a man's back after he refused to give them money.
I have never seen an aboriginal working in Australia. I mean actually working in person. Obviously Ernie Dingo does, but he is on tv, I've not met him in person.
the only time I have seen an aboriginal person working is at the Australian Embassy in London.
Now know, that somewhere out there, there are some good aboriginals, but I am yet to meet them. |

Well my father-in-law who always worked and also went to fight in Papa New Guinea also raised 7 children without a handout EVER and every one works not in in Aboriginal jobs because he didn't believe in them and his children had enormous respect for him.
When he died and we were at his wake I picked up what looked like a passport so I asked his widow another very proud lady what the papers were she told me they were citizenship papers he had to apply to become a citizen of his own country after he had been to war to fight for it.
My mother-in-law his widow was part of the stolen generation one day I asked her about saying sorry and she said anybody who has grown up without one bit advise or love from a mother, grandmother or father can say sorry but it doesn't mean anything because people still think they were better of.
She went to school but she never learned to read or write they the Aboriginal girls used to get up early do the chores and be back in their dormitory before the white girls came out to go to school.
So I don't think we can stereotype Aboriginals as any thing but survivors you imagine never having one loving relative in your childhood and then say you would be the same person today.
Yes many of them are drunks and thieves but they never had any role models to teach them any different and so we go through a vicious cycle with their children,my children are aboriginal they both have jobs and neither of them is a drunk or a thief because they had positive role models.
By the way I am white. |

Unfortunately your husband is in the minority, like people like ernie dingo - I think he is fantastic.
However, I have lived in the NT, specifically Darwin. I have seen the handouts that have been given, and what has been done to these handouts, and really its not short of disgusting. Housing totally vandallised and unsuitable to be lived in.
Many (not all) aboriginals in Darwin don’t wash - stink to high heaven and all they do is drink, scream at each other and end up in assults. Its unfortunate, but its life up there. Definatley not saying its right or just or even fair |

For your assignment you might like to add that Aboriginals tend to have poor health, have high rates of incarceration, violence and shorter life spans.
I live in the NTerritory and have experienced no problems with them as long as they are not drinking alcohol. I find them to be gentle people but they have a long way to go when it comes to issues of self-respect, self-esteem and taking care of themselves. I don't know what the answer is. |

Unfortunately, many people see aboriginals as people who are very lazy. In Canada, they are provided with many services as compensations to the mistakes made by the government, and now, everyone thinks that they are just being too dependent on the support being provided to them by the government.
Don't get me wrong. Just like any other race, many aboriginals are also hardworking and decent citizens. |

I also agree with K Bear
Stereotypes come from all walks of life. |

If you want stereotypes, look to the Australian Government.
Every coin has an image of an Australian animal - and the $2 coin shows a Aborigine. Hence, they consider Aborigines to be animals.
It doesn't help that the Southern Cross in the background makes them look like they have a swarm of flies. |
