Melbourne is just like any other large city, it has lots of advantages and lots of disadvantages, almost all of them relating to the fact it is a city. It has a diverse population, interesting shopping and great roads. It's somewhat divided along ethinic and class lines, and the weather can be extreme, but anyone who has ever had a northern wnter would probably feel it's nice and mild.

If you live in Melbourne you'll find lots to do and see, it has a special history and culture all its own.

If you don't like it, there are other places to go!

cheers :-)

Advantage - know as the best shopping in Aussie
Disadvantage - Melbourne can have 4 seasons in one day

Moyra D
Advantages - exotic range of food, good police, reasonable rents, beautiful buildings, great bay, major airport, excellent entertainment but ordinary if your idea of fun is drinking your self blind. Disadvantages - the weather samples, ordinary transport system, obsession with ping-pong played by gladiators, horrible politicians

Advantages-
not as dear as Sydney
easy to get around
great food
good pubs
friendly people
home of AFL
MCG,cricket ground
has the Melbourne cup and the spring carnival
theatres
weather (dry hot summers no humidity,a proper winter)
shopping (clothes)
has a cosmopolitan feel to it
great cafe scene
grand prix f1 and super bikes

disadvantages-
surf beaches far away from city
water restrictions in place
second dearest city
violence in the city (although never experienced it myself)
high petrol prices
traffic congestion

I'm from Melbourne and have been to most of the other capital cities and i would still choose to live here.

An advantage is the cultural diversity, but the downside is also that. There are parts of Melbourne that make you feel like you've left Australia completely!

Jumpy
advantage- not too crowded, friendly people, vibrant
I'm surprised some people hate the weather here, although its a little cold its always sunny

disadvantage- more job opportunity in Sydney. Transporation is expensive.

Eddie
