Advice on spiders, people who live in Sydney.?

I am living in Sydney and live on a second floor apartment, am I likely to get much spiders coming in, like redback etc, also I am a panel beater and today my work colleague found a Huntsman behind bumper of a BMW when he took it off, and it made me wounder whether if any dangerous spiders will be behind bumpers etc while I'm sticking my hands up there?

Am I just being daft thinking these things, because I have spoke to a few people and most people have hardly seen any deadly spiders if any.

I have been living in the UK befor so don't realy know much about spiders.

Funnel Web spiders are the only ones you have to worry about. Redbacks live in dark places outside like the corner of the garden shed out back and would not make home inside your home. Huntsmen are big and lovely. When we get a hunstman in our house the kids 'adopt' him (btw he remains free-range!) They wake up in the morning and see which room he's in.

Funnel webs naturally roam about and it's really great to be writing this from Melbourne!! (we don't get funnel webs...)

hunts men look scary but arnt, they can crawl over your hands and not bite.
yes red backs can be there if your shoving your hands into gaps use leather gloves, red back will not kill a normal healthy male

funnel webs , the female spider has a about 25% chance of killing you

it would be likely you get a funnel web, but you could and it will kill you

in short buy gloves

Redbacks normally in public dunnies. Be careful to wear gloves when gardening because of funnel web spiders. White tip spiders are venomous and sometimes inside.

Look at this chart.

http://www.spiders.com.au/

I lived on the top floor of an apartment in inner Sydney for 10 years. In my years I have seen the following in my apartment:

White tip (have been bitten and gave me a bit of swelling)
Huntsman (don't be fooled, I had an invasion in one flat and when trying to kill them all, the big mother came to look after her babies and it bit my friend on the leg and it went numb for half an hour) Huntsman like to live in Jacaranda Trees and under the bark of tress.
Red Back (hiding in a plant I bought for my balcony)
Saint Andrews Cross (wove a web outside my window one night)

That is it in 10 years of apartment living.

But wear gloves and covered shoes in the garden. Don't leave junk on your balcony where spiders can hang. Check inside your shoes before putting them on. Basically if you see a spider, keep away.

Also, if you want to be sure, ask the corporate committee in your apartment block when the last time they sprayed for pests was. It should be sprayed once a year. You can also get a pest controller to spray inside your flat. It doesn't cost much and gives you peace of mind.

Hi, welcome to Sydney. No you won't have too much trouble with spiders. You can give your apartment a bit of a spray around with mortein or some other sort of surface spray every once in a while if you want to be sure.

Huntsman spiders are not really agressive. I often get them in my house (also in Syd). You might be better off with a pair of gardening gloves on if you go poking around in the garden or garage etc. I occasionally find a spider on my wing mirror, but I just brush it off with an old towel or something.

If you do get bitten by a spider, it will come up like a large flattish heat bump and it is a good idea to see a doctor quickly and get some anti-venene in there. You will see two little holes in the bite if you look carefully.

The ones to look out for are the funnel webs, the red backs, and the white tails. Go to Borders or Dymocks and get yourself a book about spiders. It will tell you all you need to know.

I have lived here for 35 years and have only had one spider bite, didn't realise what it was at first, but had to get a jab. That was in QLD by the way.

actually the hunts man is the most posinus spider of them all..yes they are afraid of us only becuse thier fangs are so small and too weak to penetrate human skin..so they are luckly no threat..but they have the most potent posion of all spiders ..

I have never seen a red back spider in all my life, unless you count at a wildlife park or zoo.

Huntsman are harmless, they're more afraid of you. They are big and can't bite you (thier teeth aren't sharp enough)

You occasionaly may find one in the corner of your ceiling, no idea how they get inside but they do, but they won't cause any trouble. Either trap it and let it go outside or kill it, thats why Aussies wear thongs.

Deadly spiders can come in on your clothes from the laundry. Any time you are in contact with outside like trees in the street or the park, you are potentially in contact with deadly spiders. There are also insects that can bite like ticks which are common in the city and the country. Be careful.
