Yes it is a big pub culture possibly even more so than U.K. The cheapest drinking holes are the R.S.L. clubs and as a tourist you can sign yourself into any of them. Beer comes in midi's and schooners ( roughly 1/2 pint and pints) and a schooner will cost $3-4 each ( $ currently =$2.2 / £1) Like U.K. beers are usually regional in Sydney you will get Rechs., Tooheys, Carlton and Coopers and Victoria Bitter on draught. Imported beers are usually a bit more expensive.Wine is usually the same price for a 250 ml glass as beer i.e $3-$4. Sparkling wines are great value. For $20 you will get a bottle of sparkling in most bars. Bars in central Sydney i.e. George Street and in C.B.D are reasonable but can get a bit pricey in Darling Harbour and Circular Quay. Supermarkets in Australia do not sell booze inside the premises but always have a bottle shop attached. As in the U.K. you can get great bargains for drinking at home. If you like wine look for clearskins this is usually wine that has been overproduced or cancelled export orders. The label will show the grape/ blend and region. Look for McClaren Vale or Margaret River regions here all grapes/ blends. You can pay as little as $4 per bottle. Finally you will not stand long in a pub without somebody introducing themselves either a fellow traveller or a local. It is that kind of place. |

No Australians drink Fosters, they don't watch Neighbours either. If you meet someone who drinks Fosters and/or watches Neighbours you can be certain they are from the UK.
The are pubs and clubs in Australia with a huge variety of both. Try them all. Clubs are usually cheaper for drinks than pubs and are much bigger. Bowling and golf clubs are more sedate than football clubs and workers clubs with RSL clubs somewhere in the middle. |

hey im an aussie, there is a massive pub cultre over here, all aussies are known for their beer drinking, the average beer will cost somewhere between $2.70 to about $5.00 depending on what it is and where you are drinking...house wine at a local pub is about $2.70 to $4.00...spirits depend on what but for like a cruiser type pre mix vodka drink your looking at $6.00 in a pub and $8.00 in a club, any other questions about oz let me know! |

Depending on where you go drinks are from about $5 - $12 for a large beer. Obviously wine and spirits vary, also depending where you are, inner city is more expensive then rural pubs. Pubs and clubs are pretty popular, although not having been to the UK not sure if it is a similar culture. But most Aussies would perfer to go out, buy booze and then go back home to drink it. We generally will go out to eat, and get alcohol, rather then just go out to drink. My generation (18 - 25) however does go out just to drink, but not the majoirty. Buying and chilling yourself and drinking at home are alot cheaper! Hope that helps, have fun down here! We are the best country in the world ;-)!! |

What you must understand is that our cousins down under believe that real men should only drink beer; the trouble is that they don't actually like it. They solve this problem by drinking a liquid called Fosters. This is, in essence, soda water with added alcohol and dye. It is served in cans at freezing point to numb the taste buds, just in case. As a further insurance, every Australian carries with him a purpose made insulating sleeve to slip over the can so his fingers won't warm the Fosters while he is drinking it.
Refined Australians (both of them) drink their Fosters from glasses kept in a freezer.
Hope this helps. |
