You can catch some good waves on the Mornington Peninsula. Mornington has recently become very popularised as an outer suburb and it really is a lovely area but it wouldn't be very practical if your commuting to Melbourne everyday, it would drive you insane. You could however choose any of the suburbs along the south (bayside) and you'll find that they are all "good" quiet neighbourhoods. How it works is that the further out towards Mornington you go the cheaper it gets. The closer to the sea you are the more you will pay. A good half way point is Mordialloc. |

There are some decent surf beaches down the mornington peninsula and also Phillip Island. For these beaches it would be a good idea to live in Melbourne's south eastern suburbs. Where depends on how much you want to spend. Nice but expensive suburbs include Brighton, Sandringham, Beaumaris, Black Rock & Parkdale. They all have their own beaches but no surf.
If you don't want to spend that much, try Mentone, Dingley Village, Patterson Lakes, Mordialloc, Chelsea, Cheltenham or Aspendale. These are all a good distance from all the ammenities you'll need (shops, schools, restaurants, transport), but also not too far from the surf beaches. All are nice family type suburbs.
On the west side, you have some great Surf Beaches, including in Torquay. But if you want to live in Suburban Melbourne, the western suburbs aren't all that great. Williamstown is really nice, but pricey.
Check out www.realestate.com.au for price details. |

Torquay is probably the best surf beach - but it is not close to the city. Other surfing towns are Lorne, Apollo Bay, Warrnambool, Morington Peninsula. But if you want somewhere closer to the city and a beach check out Brighton, Elwood, Frankston, Beaumaris, Black Rock and my fave Williamstown. |

We stayed with my cousin in Wyndhamvale which was really nice and the beach was just down the road, Torquay is really lovely too and the beach there is amazing. |

Try around Brighton Beach, There are a lot of beaches there and sometimes there can be big waves or try somewhere eastern like Phillip Island as there is a lot of surf and it always feels like summer except in winter. |

Most of the bayside suburbs in melbourne are good, and most of melbourne is 'safe'.
If you were really keen on surfing you might want to consider geelong/torquay because that's where the good surf is. it's also a really nice area.
the other beaches in melb are more just for swimming, they have a more family feel to them |

Hi,
It would depend how much you are looking to spend on a property, and whether living by the sea is your main aim. You will find that a lot of the 'good neighbour hoods are east of Melbourne - but with this comes a price tag. Also, will your teenagers be attending school?
Areas on the coast such as torquay, are great for surfing, but impractical for living if you are looking to be working in the City (long commute).
I lived in an area called Templestowe. It is close to the city (20 mins), near great schools - but not close to the beach (you are looking at a 1 1/2 trip).
I hope this helps,
Sarah |

Melbourne is at the top of a large shallow bay which is almost enclosed, so there is little surf on the beaches close to the city.
One of the best neighbourhoods in Melbourne is supposed to be Toorak, but I doubt that any of the suburbs are particularly bad. |
