Hey everyone,
Im 27 years old from canada and have a good job, house, truck, quad etc. its kinda rare for my age to have that where i live. But lately i been really interested in Oz. I may be even overthinking and making it out to be something more than it is. I just got passport and then will be applying for a 1 year working holiday visa. I have the feeling im gonna want to stay in Oz. Now i dont know anyone there but for some reason im thinking of going around Perth / Fremantle area. Problem is i have a criminal record, and i know they ask that question when applying for a visa. So im alittle nervous im not gonna get approved.
I would like to get a job there that would sponsor me. Not sure if my trade is needed there for sponsorship. Im a "4th Class Power Engineer" basically operate boilers to make steam, pumps, compressors, motors, electrical generators etc.
Think im making a big mistake selling everything i own and quitting my job for oz?

Perth is a great option, very different climate wise than Canada though. Your skills are great! WA as you know is going through a boom fueled by supplying Iron to China since we have such an abundance and since China's economy is booming they are build build building.
You'll get a job easy....but if you want someone to sponsor you it's maybe best to try and get employed by one of the giant mining companies such as Woodside or Riotinto. Your criminal record though might pose to be a problem, you don't necessarily need clearance to be employed (don't quote me on that)but as far as getting a permanent Visa well I think they do get you to provide a certified copy of your criminal record. Depends what you did though.
Mmmm Your skills will certainly give you that added advantage. Good luck and hope to see you here in sunny Perth the state of opportunity. |

Well coming to West Aus is a smart move because we are in the middle of a boom a the moment and need workers and I am sure your trade will come in handy.Just think you are only young it is a good time to take a chance and you never know you might meet a nice Aussie girl to marry.Good Luck |

Now, i would come on a working visa for a year and check out all the mining companies west oz has to offer their are HEAPS!!!!!
Dont forget we have the biggest mine in Kalgoorlie that are always looking for people like you!!
They do fly in fly outs were you work 2 weeks on 1 week off (it varies) so they would fly you to work and then back home!!(for free!!)
All i can say is i would not let your criminal record get you down depending on what it is it may get wathered and depending on how long ago it happened, i guess.
I live not far from Freo and you would have a blast!!!

I'm a (little) older than you but not much, and am doing the same thing I'd be gone by now if my house had sold. Although I would suggest that you look into it further before taking the plunge. You can only apply for a working holiday visa for OZ once in your life and its only lasts a year so don't apply to early or it will have started before you go. I'm not sure about how you stand with the criminal record but I no of others who have got one with minor offenses. Life's to short better to regret what you have done than look back and say what if??

I would check out Queensland as well. Get a car and drive the entire East coast. www.walkabout.com.au has great info on every Australian town. Australia is big like Canada - that website would give you some ideas on where to head. Why dont you talk to our Embassy or Consulate in Canada? |
