no. i have lived in tasmania for some years and never heard of anything bad like that. the worst is you have a group of teenagers probably adult driving past you and throw a few eggs out at you while you are walking on the street, sometimes yell obscenities. i would say it's probably once in a lifetime thing. otherwise its great! now i have been living in adelaide city for nearly two years and no, nothing like that has ever happened, probably because i live in the city close to its chinatown.
yes, there were incidents in perth where asian shops are targeted victims of vandalism (by who i have no idea) but this kind of things happen everywhere in the world and i also agree that alot of the problems are created by asian triad gangs themselves.
but i truly believe that aussies are very friendly and welcoming. they are probably the least "racist" people still living on earth.

Last time I looked Lebanon was in Asia and the Lebanese are Asians as are Israelis, Saudis, Iraqis, Bangladeshis, some Russians and Turks and lots and lots of other nationalities, cultures and ethnic groups. You cannot make blanket statements about Asians any more than you can about Africans or Europeans.

There are gangs like this all over the world. I think your friend is talking about a minority. I'm part filipino and know a lot of filipinos living in Melbourne. They don't seem to have any problems with racial gangs where they live.

Look - in any population of any people there will be a minority of morons who can cause an amazing amount of damage. Whether these gangs are Asians beating up Asians or Lebs beating up Asians, etc, etc is irrelevant - they don't represent the beliefs of their people any more than Pauline Hanson represents the beliefs of all white Australians.

There are areas of just about every city where there's a possibility of scuffles over race but steer clear of them and you'll find most people very welcoming.

There's apparently some really nasty asian gangs here that chase people, though I'm in Victoria.

And just out of simple, pure curiosity, what do you consider to be a small group of Asians? As I've never seen less than 30 together at a time. 130 in Hawaii!! There was only four of us who spoke English on the entire bus, so they only translated into English, but spoke mostly in another language, in the USA no less.

I went on a trip to Spain and France, and there would be 4-6 of us that would walk around together.
