Central Coast
Depends on your budget. Xmas to end of January is peak vacation time in Sydney.
Best to book accommodation as soon as possible.
Searching these sites might assist.
Have a great time!

Kirribilli is on Sydney's close north side.
Handy to Milsons Point railway station, ferries, buses.

The wake-up hostel in Sydney is good, if you want to meet lots of people etc. Seer clear of the YHA's, they have a really strange atmosphere and are quite clinical - depends on what you like.

The Swiss Grand Hotel on Bondi Beach, lovely hotel, roof top swimming pool, stunning views, great food, it is quite pricey though.

You will feel safe everywhere, wherever you stay it's not like the UK. The motels are safe and cheap, look on wotif.com they were great. We even managed to stay in the Novotel on Darling Harbour in Sydney, that was fantastic. Don't just stay in Sydney though, travel all the East coast it was fantastic, we are waiting now for our visa to come through so we can live there. CANT WAIT. Have a wonderful time.

you could try the youth hostel. the new one in the centre of sydney is very modern, more hotel like than hostel, and is pretty reasonabley priced.
That said I was last there about 8 years ago, so it may have changed....

try looking at www.yha.com.au this is the youth hostels website. they are generally pretty well run. also try www.realestate.com.au if u dont want to stay in a youth hostel.

the most beautiful part of sydney (in my opinion) is the northern beaches district. its only a ferry ride/bus trip from the cbd, and has very beautiful beaches. there is a youth hostel i know in avalon and the guy who runs it is pretty decent.

I suggest "The Ranch", in North Ryde. Decent pub there, good food, good drinks, good prices, shops and train station within a 5 minute walk.

over homework
Try http://www.wotif.com/ its my favourite site :P
