Darwin is great, I'm there right now. The monsoon is just starting so it's not the best time to visit. Come in the dry season, there is plenty to see and do. Thursday Island has wet and dry seasons too. There is not much to do on Thursday Island if you don't like fishing but if you like fishing you are in paradise. |

i came to darwin in 1984, the car broke down. while we waited for it to be fixed, 3 weeks we were told till the new part arrived, we were offered work. the car was fixed on time but we never left. during that 3 weeks the place got under our skin and we are still here and will be till the day we die. |

Hi - I agree with all of those above about Darwin. Don't forget that Kakadu national park is only 3 hours drive away too. If you are after a tropical aboriginal cultural island experience you can do a tour across to Bathurst and Melville islands from Darwin.
I have not been to Thursday Island - It would be interesting but it is relatively difficult to get to and not as oriented to tourism.(which you may like) |

I love Darwin too! It's tropical & warm, a city without any bustling ~ at 9am on a weekday you can cross the main street without looking both ways! lol.
It's also not too far away from the beautiful Litchfield National Park and the Adelaide River - where you can see crocs a plenty! Litchfield has waterfalls & waterholes where it is safe to swim...no really, it is!
Anyway, it's really worth checking out Darwin if you're over this way...enjoy.. =o) |

Darwin is an interesting place. I have not been to Thursday Island, but it's a much smaller place in comparison. |

I love Darwin. I haven't been to any of The Islands most are aboriginal reserves or mining but if it wasn't for the weather I would live in Darwin. I've spent a lot of time there but come September October I say I don't have to put up with this weather anymore, to hot and humid but april to September is surperb. Darwin is a very Tropical very interesting city. |
