Anyone from Australia?

I am wondering, is there anywhere in Australia that Funnel Web spiders do not live?? If you are from Australia, have you ever seen one? How bad are they there? Do you have to worry about stepping on one at night, finding one in your shoe, etc.?

Hello,
I havent seen any either. Funnel web spiders are only found in south eastern parts of Australia. Sydney funnel web is known to be one of the worst ones, but despite the fact that they even live in peoples' yards, it is very seldom that they have killed anyone. There are also many other dangerous spiders in Australia. I found a redback in my back yard only last week. Their webs are quite easy to recognise. You dont have to worry about stepping on a spider at night, they are in places like your flowerbeds and under the rocks in your yard. I would check the shoes for redbacks only if i havent used for the shoes for a while so they may have made a nest there. Others you wouldnt find them walking in your shoes. Theres more info on Australian spiders here:

There have been no fatal spider bites since 1979.

The Sydney funnel web is the only dangeous type, and only lives in Sydney. It is really only found in the bushy suburbs, particularly in the leafy areas between Chatswood and Hornsby. I grew in a very bushy area in this zone, and saw one maybe 4 times in my life. Aussies don't leave shoes outside when they aren't wearing them and wear shoes outdoors and gloves when gardening.

I'm a Grandma and I've lived in many different places here and I've never seen a Funnel Web spider.

I've lived in Australia for over 30 years and moved around a lot up and down the east coast. I'm now living in a country town about 2 1/2 hours from the coast in NSW and saw my first one a few weeks ago.... and I only saw it because I found the hole and made an effort to watch it to see what came out of it. I also found a 2 foot long blue tongue lizard... and I only saw that because I was stalking the funnel web hole. We've been in this house for nearly 6 months and they've both probably been here the whole time.

So no, you don't have to worry about plagues of funnel webs everywhere - it's not common to come across them!

Aaaaarrrrggghhhhh !!!!

I am so sick of people asking about bloody spiders and snakes.

I have never seen one in my time on this earth and no I don't worry about stepping on one at night. I just get on with life and don't worry about snakes and spiders. Maybe you should do the same !!
