Are Australians cool with Americans?

Or am I gonna get beat down when I arrive in Sydney with my American accent? And while we're on the subject, do Australians think Americans have an accent?? Cause I don't think I have one. If so, do you like our accents?

No not many australians like the american accent but are to polite to say so , anyway have good time in Australia ,just make sure if you get to the pub you are obliged to buy a round of Beer for everyone there, its custom . Haha

You'll be fine here and yes you do have an accent.

I think you'll find the majority of us are more interested in your personality and what you have to say than where you're from or your accent.

Honey, nobody thinks they have an accent, and everybody does. It's funny, it doesn't matter who they are, or where they're from, they will swear they have no accent. Even my Mum, she'll swear she's got no accent, she's Scottish, trust me she has an accent, and so do you. We won't have a problem with it, we hear everyday on telly, just don't speak really loud. I tell every person who comes here from the USA, and I'm serious, whatever you do, never ever say that idiotic 'shrimp on the barbie' thing. Honestly. We HATE it. It drives us bonkers. People who mention thongs to you are talking about flip flops, you know on your feet, not your underwear. Don't say you 'root' for any particular team either, the word 'root' means something else altogether here. Apart from that, you shouldn't have any trouble at all, just beware-Aussies have a very strange sense of humour, they'll take the piss out of you at the drop of a hat, don't be offended, most of the time they don't mean anything by it.

We accept all comers here. I know many Americans from visits there and they are great people. I find most Americans ( or Yanks as you may be called) have an accent and it is fine. You should not take offence at being called a Yank either as that is how we talk. Enjoy your stay and declare at customs ANY food or plant material you bring with you or you may find life difficult at the border. Customs are VERY strict.

We accept American's, well from where i live in Sydney we do.

Yes we think you have accents. Every body has accents. Some stronger that others, nothing to be affraid of.

Yes. Americans have accents, and it's sort of ridiculous how they think they don't just because they can't hear it. We can't hear our own accents either.
... ... Well, don't say arrogant USA centred things like that and you should be fine. Australians tend to be of the belief that Americans think they're the centre of civilisation and better than everyone else, and that sort of comment would confirm it.

haha im an aussie and when i went to the states, everytime i opened my mouth people would stare at me :)

but when a yank is down under, people dont care. were all the same :)

EVERYONE has an accent. Of you do, you're from a different country, just like we don't hear our own accent but you will notice it.

Generally, we don't like the whole loud mouth, arrogant, ignorant, USA #1, 'We do it differently in America', 'We do it better...', 'That's not how we do it' attitude.

If you accept that you ARE in a different country and respect the way we do things you will be fine.

Just be yourself, but remember where you are. If you want everything to be done as it is in the US, then stay in the US.
