Are the international students safe in melbourne????????????? |
When I came 2 Melbourne i was told that it is very safe to life. But now I can n`t feel ssafe even in the day time caz last year I was assaulted and robbed by 2 Aussie guys. and the time was just 6:00pm. then next month two of my HOUSEMATES WERE ROBBED on the way 2 house. The fact is that some of the youngsters do not like Indians. They usually carry rods with them to hit us. I am really very stressed as i came 2 Australia for better future. |

G'day,
Apart from 2 silly comments, you can see that we do feel sorry and terrible with what happened to you and your housemates. I'm just curious as the area that you currently live in, b'cos you might live in the 'unsafe' area, although nowadays it is hard to be certain abt the safe area either. My advise is to move away from the area as soon as your contract is up. Ask around before moving into a new place abt the criminal activities etc.
I am an immigrant in Melbourne and used to be an international students as well, so I can understand your frustration and anger. You might even think that you have been duped with poor propagandas. However I can assure you that wherever you go to, whether it is western countries, or 3rd world countries, you can never let your guard down and have to be alert all the time. I'm not asking you to be paranoid, but just be careful. Basically just practice what we usually do in our home country and you'll be likely to survive the experience.
Please do not hesitate to report to the police of any criminal activities that you experience.
Hope this helps. I (and all the Yahoo respondents here) certainly hope that you overcome this terrible experiences and can finish your study very well. |

I'm sorry to hear that, there are always some nasty people around. On the whole, though, Australia is still a safe country. |

I am terribly sorry for the brutality you have suffered from a stupid, mindless minority of Australians. Most of us welcome you and would be appalled at these crimes against you. I hope you and your housemates reported these crimes to the police.
As a small woman, I never feel completely safe because most men are twice my size. For this reason I took self-defense lessons, and this has raised my self-confidence that I would not be completely helpless in most situations.
I also practice "street wisdom", which means being aware of who is near me and how they are behaving, so I can avoid unpleasant situations.
I do NOT advocate taking on the same aggressive behaviour as the criminals and thugs, simply taking steps to protect oneself and others.
I think you and your housemates would benefit from learning tae kwondo, karate, or similar, and do this together so that you all gain a sense of confidence as a group!
Don't get depressed, get angry! |

I am very sorry to hear of your being assaulted and hope it does not happen again. I have lived in many places in the world and I would have thought that Melbourne was one of the safer ones as long as you stayed away from certain situations. Is it possible that you are living in one of those areas where drugs and many of our other social ills are prevalent? I'm sure there are places in India where you would be taking a risk by going there alone. |

I'm disgusted that australians would do that to you and your friends. australians on the whole are not like that. generally it's a very safe place to live. |

hi i live in melbourne and am of indian nationality although I was raised here. however I can say that this has never happened to me or any other people i know who are indian as well.
When my dad chose to move to australia he did so because he had been to many places all over the world (he travelled alot) and found melbourne australis the safest, so please do not feel disheartened.
The only things that I can really say with true confidence is that you are not living in a safe neighbourhood. It is probably one which is kind of a 'druggy' place or maybe it is dominated by an ethnic community which do not fancy indians.
Maybe you should consider moving to a safer, more family orientated neighbourhood.
But don't worry about being indian or anything because they truly love us here. I was however once assaulted by some one who started calling me wog and abusing me so it is not just indians that are sometimes descriminated against. The people who who discriminate are losers though!!! |
