Hello,It'sMe |
Are there any black people in Melbourne Australia? |
Im thinking of going to the University of Melbourne and I was just wondering if someone was flying over melbourne they'd be able to spot me cuz I'll look like a black dot in a whole city of whites.
I'm not predjudice, in fact ever school I've been to is mostly white and it doesnt bother me none, it would just be kind of weird If I'm the only black person in a whole city.
I hope none of you take my question the wrong way. |

I live in Melbourne and you'll have no problem. In fact, you'll be the focus of a lot of [positive] attention given that you're one of only a few black people. I can't speak for others but I'd see you not as Black, but as American (and that's a lot worse these days :-) )
We do have a small population of black people here, mostly refugees from Sudan and neighbouring African countries. A lot of them work as taxi drivers and other lowly-paid jobs.
At Melbourne Uni you'll be a minority but don't worry about that - so are White people. The place is wall-to-wall Asians.
Melbourne is very much a multi-cultural city and while you'll perhaps experience some racism I would think it'll be less than you'd experience in any other city.
You'll be welcome here. Come and enjoy what we have to offer. |

You don't have to worry! I know being African American we are afraid to venture out because all the issue here in the states. I have been to Melbourne several times and never felt so much love in my life! I didn't get the stares and the profiling like here in the States! No one looked at me funny or made me feel like I wasn't wanted. I am going to finish my schooling in February there. I love it there so much. The only time anyone ever looked at me different is when I spoke. They were intrigued by my accent.
Australians are a much more tolerant and educated culture. They really are open and friendly. Trust me, when you get there you will have the time of your life! |

The Aboriginees ( spelling?) are black... so I doubt you would be the only black person. People from all over live in Australia. |
