Are there any interesting places near Sydney (within 1 hour bus/train journey) that I should visit? |
As part of my round the world trip I'm going to Sydney for 3 weeks in August... does anyone recommend any places that are not your typical touristy destinations that are worth visiting? |

I suggest you go to Darling Harbour, The Opera House, and the famous bar and restaurants there. Or you can always choose to go to The Entrance equally appealing too. |

I would stay at Pittwater YHA which in the far northern suburbs of Sydney rather than a day trip.
Just near a National Park, and nice and secluded.
Take a bus and a ferry to get there- maybe a bit over an hour.
Breakfast on the verandah for a million dollar view of Pittwater and be joined by kookaburras and various parrots who will want to share your meal.
It will be quiet midweek but crowded on weekends with Sydneysiders. |

Catch a bus to Northern Beaches of Sydney. Palm Beach, Avalon Beach and Newport Beach are all within 100 metres of a bus route. Look for routes 190 or 188. You will also see a bit of Pitttwater and Broken Bay. Climb up to Barrenjoey lighthouse for spectacular views.
Catch a ferry to Manly and walk back to Clontarf along a harbourside track. About 12 km, I think. Catch a bus back to Sydney.
Catch a train to Cronulla and a ferry to Bundeena on the edge of the Royal National Park. Or catch a train to Kiama. Great views from the train. |

try the australian reptile park you can hand feed kangaroos there , see spiders and snakes , and hold a koala bear!!
great fun and its not to busy!( north of sydney near the freeway)
or you could go to the royal botanical gardens in sydney which is near the opera house( just round the corner in fact!)
the Rocks area in sydney's centre is very pretty and you can see all Sydneys History there.
check out my youtube site for videos of these places on our trip to oz! |

The Central Coast is about an hour by train north of Sydney. There are some beautiful beaches, like Norah Head. Terrigal and The Entrance are also on the Central Coast, but they are the most touristy places in the area, and can be crowded at holiday times. There's also great hiking places if you're into that kind of thing, around the Gosford area, also on the coast.
Newcastle is about 2 hours north of Sydney, but is also a great place to visit. |

Darling harbour, the aquarium, taronga zoo, bondi, Manly, The Rocks, obviously the bridge (the bridge climb if your brave enough) and the Opera House. Last time I went we did the speed boat round the bay (brilliant and very wet) Do it all, you'll not be sorry, and yes they are all touristy things but isn't that what you go on holiday for? |

I would just take the ferries around the harbour. They go everywhere, you can even go up the river on the River Cat from Darling Harbour or Circular Quay to Parramatta and return if you like a change.Have a great holiday and welcome to Aussie. |
