Are there any spcific problems in Melbourne ?

I am planning to move to Melbourne in 2 years and everything about it sounds "perfect". No one said anything bad about it so far. Are there NO problems in Melbourne ? there should be . Let me know if you know :
what kind of problems people complain about
and kind of problems immigrants have
Thank You.

I would also appreciate if you would like to discuss some staff with me about the topic via msn: koraydervis@yahoo.com

DOUG your full of it.

Mate, to be honest no place will ever be "problem free".
One main concern you may have is a housing concern. At the present there is what some would cal a housing crisis. There is a higher demand then there is in supply, so you would be competing against other prospective tenants who already have a full time job and can already show that they can pay rent.

Another concern may be the weather. Melbourne is known for wet weather. If this doesn't deter you ....GREAT
The city is always alive with energy, people will always be people and there will always be crime. Sydney is worse then Melbourne when it comes to crime. At least in alleyways in Melbourne you find boutique shops or a cafe not a knife in your guts.

As an imigrant you may find trouble getting work or accomdation to start with but Melbourne and more so Australia is a very multicultural society. Tried Cab driving part time? or shop assistant. If you are ruthless in searching then you will find something suuited to your needs.

'Doug' the top answerer - GET OVER YOURSELF and STOP putting Australia down.

Any city has each own 'problem'.
but, no - you will not get killed walking down the street, or gunned down in some mall.

Melbourne is a beautiful city although it can get four seasons in one day sometimes.

Good luck on your move and enjoy Melbourne.

There is crime in all cities but the crime rate in Australia is low and falling despite what the tabloids and John Laws tell you. The city with the highest level of crime in Australia is Darwin. Melbourne has warm to hot mainly dry summers but cool to cold wet winters. Sydney has mild dry winters and warm wet summers. I have lived in Melbourne at various times and have always enjoyed myself. My preference is for Sydney but four million people live in Melbourne so it must be doing something right.

Check the Melbourne newspapers on line

The Herald Sun is probably heraldsun.com.au but I don't know for sure. I never read it.

mate I would go with lion tamers comments more accurate than anyone elses - I would prefer melbourne to sydney anyday.

The biggest problem we have re crime here in melbourne at the moment is the "gang wars" between Sudanese and Vietnamese immigrants that live in the housing commission flats that are scattered across Melbourne. The reason behind it as far as i can see is that the Sudanese have come from a war torn country and have just been planted in society without proper integration. they are so used to being at war, that they are unable to convert to Australian life as quickly as other immigrants. Steps are being taken to combat this.

The drug trade is also big in these areas, but if you are not involved then I dont see it as an issue.

I have not problem walking through the city of a night by myself, nor walking home after work when its getting dark.

As far as Im concerned, Melbourne is perfect, and I wouldnt live anywhere else again.

...i have lived in Melbourne all of my life(37years)...honestly its not much different to sydney...do you want to live in melbourne itself or its surrounding suburbs.....i dont know know what nationality you are but certain areas accomodate certain religions...just like other cities do too.....let us know what nationality you are and that might help as i dont want to offend ect.....melbourne is a gr8 city so no one has the right to bag it!!!

G'day K,

It seems that you keep looking for any problems that immigrants has in Melbourne.

As my previous answers indicate (and also the earlier answerer in this particular topics), you will find a problem in any cities in the world if YOU ARE LOOKING FOR IT!!

Racism, house robbery, drugs, pollution, mafia shoot-outs, car thief... of course Melbourne got them. So does New York, London, Hong Kong and all other big cities. How big are they... let's say that I will not leave my house unlocked at night and when I'm not at home, but I feel secure enough to take my money from local ATM or walking by myself in the middle of the night.

Is the answer from Doug is the one you are expecting?

The only thing that I think the other cities do not have problem is water restriction, since the whole Australia is facing a water crisis.

My suggestion will be for you to come for a 1-2weeks holiday in Melbourne and see it yourself whether you like the life here or not.

Hope this helps :)

Y not ask us 3 months from the time you will be arriving. We can give you better advice then.
Generally Melbourne's wettest month used to be October. This is not a rainy nor dangerous city.I've lived in HK,Manila,Budapest,Paris,Rome,London,Per... and Sydney.I find Melbourne to be the best of the lot(overall).I now live in one of the Ethnicaly most diverse areas:Dandenong,Noble Park,Springvale and there are hardly any problems.Never any for me.In fact it is a joy to live in these Suburbs that are Ethnically so diverse. You will not have any problems unless you go looking for it.Ask again b4 you come.

I'm not sure where Lion Tamer lives, but it's a bit rude for them to say that someone is full of it, when the tamer is also full of it.

Melbourne is not known for rain.
Melbourne (in fact the entire state of Victoria) is currently experiencing the worst drought on record, and everyone is suffering through tight water restrictions.
No washing the car, no watering the lawn, no playing under the sprinkler when it's 42 degrees.

.....as for the comments about the night life being safer in Melbourne than in Sydney, I'd dispute that one too.
There's plenty of stabbings at high profile clubs, many fatal.
For those who missed it, someone was shot at the Viper Room (Chapel St) yesterday.

Melbourne is a good place to live if you are rich. Even Singapore, Malaysia or India is a good place to live if you have dough in your pocket. The job opportunities are not great and if you are lucky you may gain employment of your choice. Tax structure is also not so great, you have to pay a lot to the government if you want to earn good money. Real estate can pose a problem as property prices & rents are high in Melbourne, that also depends upon where you want to live, its cheaper in outskirts. Melbourne is not crime free and racial motivated crime do occur sometimes as mentioned by other members along with robberies, rape and murders.

Good thing about Melbourne is you can have some fun on weekends as night life is good. Water crisis won't affect you as Iong as you dont water your lawns and wash your car daily.
