No, mate, there are not lots of dangerous people in the Outback. In fact, there aren't that many people of any variety in the Outback. The only people you need to worry about are the driver of your car, and Bluey. He is driving the road train coming at you. Oh, and look out for the tourists. Half of them are Yanks, and are driving on the wrong side of the road...

i think a great way to convince her is to make out a whole itinerary and keep making the point that you'll be in the main cities or around a lot of people all the time. also tell her you'll be signing up for trustworthy tourist group things. if she doesn't want to go, i'll go with you. i always wanted to go to australia

Personally I think the big cities have the most dangerous people - I mean look at all the murders there, rapist etc, bad crime all over.

Like anywhere driving - make sure you are safe and have the extra water, petrol and food travelling long distance.

there are just as many dangerous people in your country as ours. If you take the usual precautions & use common sense you'll be fine. i.e. don't drive at night
use ATM's in the middle of the day & in the middle of a town.
don't pick up hitchhikers/strangers
stay in caravan parks, etc. - don't camp by the side of the road.
stay out of the pubs at night - don't give out personal details to strangers.
carry a mobile phone

I won't be worried about dangerous people in the outback, rather scared of dangerous snakes and spiders (which would be highly unlikely as well). But don't tell your girlfriend that.

Watch out for Les Patterson, Bluey and Curly, Dad and Dave of Snake Gully, Crocodile Dundee, Skippy, John Howard, John Clark (Ooops, sorry, he's a Kiwi), Russel Crow (don't go near him if he's near a phone), John Farnham, and of course, The Bee Gees.
Come on Mate, just think straight. The whole world's a dangerous place and inhabited by the people your mother told you to be careful of. Australia is no worse, and probably anelluva lot better than anywhere else.
Just be sensible.

I have hitchhiked ll over Australia and have never had any trouble at all. No hitchhiker I have spoken to has had any trouble. Hundreds of thousand of people travel through outback Australia every year without meeting murderous nutters. In the last 40 years, I think there have been two who have made the news, Ivan Milat in the Belanglo State Forest and Bradley John Murphy at Barrow Creek. Both of them are in gaol.

If you don't go you will regret it, seeing Uluru and the outback is a must when you come to Oz.
You guys will have a blast, nothing to worry about at all...
Forget Wolf Creek, that's like saying you won't go to the beach because you saw Jaws LOL

I travelled around central Australia in a campervan on my own for a month and was never bothered. It was like a very safe theme park.

You will always be in the company of other tourists unless you go to remote places. In the remote mining towns such as Coober Pedy where they make their own law you don't arrive alone wearing a bikini.

The Northern Territory can be a fair bit rougher and wilder than other parts of Australia, but in the main tourist destinations you'll be going to such as Uluru you're more likely to be irritated by the tourists than bothered by local nutters.

The state of some of the Indigenous people in the towns who don't abide by the non-drinking policy of the Lands can be very distressing though.

From my experience..... you could compare the Australian outback to rural Texas.... Same thrill, same people, same fun....
