Are there really lots of people called 'Shelia' in Australia? Or is this another false stereotype?

Shelia is an Australian slang word meaning woman.I myself have never meet an Australian with the name Shelia. One of my husband's nieces is named Shelia and at the moment she is here from Ireland on a one year working visa and the poor crater had to give her herself a different name as she has gotten such grief when she told people her name was Shelia.

Sheila in australia means the equivalent of chick or bird so basically woman. It may be a name as well but that is why aussies call everyone sheila.

Lived in Australia for the first 25 years of my life. Met one woman the whole time called Shiela.

Draw what you will from that .........

Used occasionally - but overrated like a false sterotype - 'Doll' is used more. I get called that a few times a day shopping, getting served etc....

As you can see many others have already answered this question...a sheila is the slang term for a woman.

It is a name too however, and in my 23 years living there I met one woman called Shiela.

Kevin
I actually do know someone named Sheila. She's the only Sheila I know though, I've never met another.

ANDREW J

they call girls sheila . . . some women may be named sheila too but its probably not very likely....it'd be like a girl in the us being named "lady" or "woman" . . . . kinda funny!!

Laura
Just so. Like, "What's your name Bruce?", or, What's your favorite color Blue?"
