Are you a republican or a monarchist? |
if you had to vote today would you want australia to remain under the queen? why?
personally i think the sooner we become a republic the better, we're a fantastic country and we should assert our Independence to gain the respect of other countries politically.
not to mention the fact that if the governor general wants to he could fire our PM. he probably wont but the fact of the matter is that he can.
the Australian people should rule over Australia. not some woman on the other side of the world. |

monarchist, I'm sorry but every republic I know of is basically a copy of America and the world only needs one America, it isn't big enough for more. Not only that but how does being a client state of the United Kingdom detrimentally affect us? Also changing to a republic means we'd have to change what image is on our coins and that would cost a lot of money that I would prefer be spent on things like public health. |

If you study politics you will realise that there will be no real difference, except for the face on our coins.
Apart from that, we are a self-governing nation, we have no input from the monarchy and we don't send money over there. And don't worry, the queen probably wants to get rid of us, more than we want to get rid of them.
Britain is our ally, and I personally would like to keep it that way. God knows with our under-sourced defence force, we need all the allies we can get.
BTW, our GG is female. |

lol, why is that a bad thing if she fires the PM?
Personally, I am indifferent. We aren't paying to keep it so why change it. Not to mention how expensive it would cost to change it. The money could be spent on other things.
So you say we spend all this money just so some people can have a better feeling in their stomach?
If it's not broken, don't fix it. |

first of all; the Govoner general is a LADY!! Quentin Bryce - ex govoner of Queensland.
personally, I dont mind which way we go. I think that Australia will stay as part of the monarch until the Queen goes. Once Charles gets in, he wont be ruling Australia.
As long as the flag doesnt change, I dont care. A lot of men and women died fighting for the flag that makes us a nation today. If we were to change the flag, then in my opinion, they died for nothing. Freedom, yes; but under the flag we have now.
who cares if there is the Union Jack on our flag. Fiji still has it and they broke away (i think)!

Australia becoming a republic can't come soon enough for me, but I don't want it with an appointed, figurehead president. I believe we should have a directly elected president with enough real power to be able to make a difference - hopefully outside party considerations though I think that's a pretty forlorn hope.
I was an adult in 1975 when the foreign queen sacked our lawfully and democratically elected Prime Minister through her unelected governor general - I will never forgive her for that and nothing like that must ever be allowed to happen again.
I can't understand why people like one of your other answerers assume that America and its being a republic have any connection with the things that Australians dislike about the country. There are a great many good things about the USA and the way it's run and we can learn a lot from them; discarding the bad and keeping the good ideas. America is the way it is for many, many historical reasons and is not all bad as some would have us believe. It would never have assumed anything approaching its position in the world if it was still connected to Britain as we have been for so long to our very real detriment. It's a great shame that Eureka didn't end up as the Australian Revolution. Our country would be a lot further ahead now if it had and we're where we are in spite of the British monarchy - not because of them.
Oh, and saying that we shouldn't become a republic because it would cost too much to change our coins is on a par with saying that daylight saving fades the curtains. What about when the foreign queen is succeeded by her ridiculous, dopey son? Setting aside the fact that existing coins aren't withdrawn anyway, what would happen then? |
