Aussies: Were you thrilled with your new Governer-General in her purple dress?

Quentin Bryce became Australia's first female G-G yesterday:

(Australian republicans, please don't jump on me! I'm for a republic too, but I think QB is splendid...)

But what about the symbolism of the colour purple? (one of the traditional feminist colours from the days of the Suffragettes.) QB is a well-known advocate of women's rights.

Cool
<sigh> she 'looked' great.

Now, with how she looked in her purple dress out of the way, lets get down to what kind of mother she is.....

<sigh>

I don't really care that she is a woman ... ( i know .. I'm so slack ).. but I hope that she does a good job and yes I think she looks nice in her outfit. It also doesn't matter that she *looks old* as one person said... the position really shouldn't be for a person who has had little experience in life .. ( although given sir John Kerr ... maybe too much experience with the Booze bottle wasn't a good thing)

Good Luck to her... :)

Elizabeth
Quentin Bryce always, without exception, looks elegant and impeccably groomed.

After seeing her as Governor of Queensland over the last 5 years it was no surprise to see her looking as elegant as she did.

Edit:
Yes I see your point about the symbolism of her chosen colour. (Well spotted by you.)
Yet, again an example of Ms Bryce's attention to detail and quiet dignity.

holly
I like her, liked her purple dress too, but I don't give a rats a** about her office

Ross M
She looked wonderful and elegant a true lady, I'm very proud that my country finally has a woman as GG, I hope she will be our first president.
The colour may be a small nod to female suffrage

FFS what's with the names?
Thanks for that link, Zucchinis! I am going to use it to listen to her speech a bit later.

A lot of people are surprised when I say I am not a republican, but am quite happy with the present system.

To put it simply, the chance to have people such as Quentin Bryce, Dr Marie Bashir (Governor of NSW) and Sir Roden Cutler (NSW) in the public domain may help to understand my point of view.

These are excellent people of whom any nation could justly be proud, but they are also NOT people who would ever seek political office.

Do they have a part to play? Yes, and the present system gives them, and others like them, an opportunity to do so.

As for the purple dress, I love it :-)

Cheers :-)

I get so mad when I think about the very existence of her office that I couldn't care less about the person occupying it.

I think it is great and i hope to see many more

looks more blue to me.

secondly, who cares? I don't think she dressed to deliberately make a colour statement. It's nice to see people in government out of grey, black and navy.

That was actually the first time i've looked at that picture and the first thing I noticed was how old she is. Sorry, but it was. And she's not exactly smiling either.

Purple usually symbolises power and royalty.

I actually like being part of the Commonwealth. Australia is already a powerful country, and we are probably somewhat separated from the UK slightly already, but have you ever thought about how becoming a republic will effect our relationships with other countries in the long term? We tend to follow America with alot of things, TV, foods, health should we add this to our list as well?

Edit:Yeah I do prefer the picture where she looks happier. I don't watch very much TV anymore, and facial expressions can affect the way you look at someone.
