I work FOR Indians and I work WITH Indians.
As other people have mentioned the class system if really off putting.....this is most noticeable with a certain prominent religion that I think you don't find in to many other places bar India. They are very good at looking down their noses at other people....grrr....it just not true blue.
The only other thing that I have trouble with is the way they treat women...... Sure Aussie guys think it but the Indian guys will say it...... Some times it is funny and it can be taken as a joke but other times it is just wrong.
On the other hand I really enjoy working and socialising with most of them and I can always count on an Indian to come and party with me!!!
Other things I love about Indians....poppadoms and naan and parathra and gulab jarmen only Indians know how to cook all of these things right. |

Their food is great. The ones who have lived here for a while are great. The new arrivals come here thinking their class system in India actually means something in Australia. That is until they come up against some good old fashioned Aussie bringing them down to size.
The majority of the ones I work with are either lazy, do lots of tertiary study because they are practically incompetent, smelly (don't use deodorant), or think they're too good for menial tasks. |

I hate dealing with them in business...I have no problem dealing with shrewd business people but find Indians , as a group , are beyond shrewd !
Don't need it , don't want it ! They can deal with someone else ! lol |

I am not an Aussie but the only thing I do not like in the Indian behavior is the lack of customer service. Indian store clerks are known for yelling at customers and being rude to them. This is a no-no in the West. A customer is always right. |

I've known some great Indians. I've also known a few that give the rest a bad name.
At the end of the day, I don't really care if they're Indian or not. At the end of the day, they're still people. You get your good and your bad. |

I travelled to India in 2001 and sorry to say it was the worst country I had ever visited and still is and I have been to over 40 countries.
The beggars, rats, smells, con artists were overwhelming, never seen nothing like it before
Likes ??? curry tastes good.
Dislikes, smell, hygiene, accent(very difficult to understand what they saying to you)
I am sure some indians are nice though. |

Generally speaking, in my experience, I have found that most Aussies tend to take people as they come regardless of the other person's background. For example if a person is nice they'll be liked. If a person isn't nice to others, they won't be liked. Most Aussies tend to respect other people's cultures but they generally would like their culture to be respected too. When there is a lack of respect between differing cultures, problems begin to arise, (ie the need for reconciliation which occurred between Aboriginal Australians and non-Aboriginal Australians). Harmony between peoples of different cultures is achievable through respect, education and the sharing of cultural practises, as well as the willingness of people to learn about another person's culture. On that note, I would like to say that I have met quite a few Indian people (from India, Fijian Indians and American Indians) and have found them all to be interesting, beautiful people. |

Some of them are very nice, smart and funny, but a lot of them can be very difficult when it comes to striking a deal in business - they have a reputation for pushing to get the best deal to the point where it aggravates the seller. A lot of people do not like them for this. Personally the ones I have met have been fun, generous, and very clever. And of course their food is fabulous!!!!!! |

A lot of people have trouble understanding Indian accents and most seem to have long names. I always feel really rude when I can't remember them!
Other than that, I haven't any particular thoughts about Indians, they're around... |

I don't know indians as such but they seem nice.
Indians I see are mainly taxi drivers or work in restaurants.
I know they are good at business.
I saw a nice Indian doctor at the hospital.
I never see indians who are drunk or behaving badly.
But i have never been to a cricket match so i don't
know what goes on there.
I think Indians generally have a good sense of humour. |

My impressions on Indians? I have had some positive and some negative experiences.
I have worked with the most friendliest group of people on one project and then on the very next project the group of people I worked with were lazy and more concerned about the Australia-India cricket scores and long lunches than actually doing any work.
I've worked with snobs in saris who thought they were above me and only associated with their own race. I have also enjoyed working with those who didn't place any importance on social stucture.
I have had to complain about a Sikh taxi driver's washing habits (or lack thereof) - I had to have the window open in the dead of winter or pass out from the B.O. - I nearly threw up!
I had the rudest Indian doctor at my medical clinic, where he reduced me to tears, and now, I request that I NOT be seen by him.
In my business, a couple of my most favourite customers are Indians. They are fabulously fun people. And yet, when I owned a franchise food store, they would come in droves whenever the franchise had special deals (especially when we had buy one, get one free days!) but when the specials were not on we wouldn't see any of them.
So, I've seen the best and I've seen the worst, and in general I would say that they are exactly the same as any other race. |

wtf zucchinisisback? American Indians? lol?
No problems with indians for me, loads of them lived around me in the north west of sydney, they tend to work harder than the british australians anyway.
The only problem I would have is when you can't understand an indian through their accent, but atleast they're trying
no qualms for me |

My mother always said to me "If you don't have anything nice to say then don't say anything at all"
So here I am - not saying anything. |

Most Aussies think you are talking about American Indians, LOL!
I know you mean Indians from India, as I have some lovely Indian neighbours in Melbourne. They are friendly, helpful, and respectful, and I love Indian food, so I personally am well-disposed towards Indians.
But I am not prejudiced towards other ethnic groups or religions - some other Aussies are, and some Indians are, LOL!
My impression is that Indians are hard-working, motivated migrants who mostly speak reasonable English, so they fit into Australian society well. The thing most Aussies object to is when migrants bring their ethnic or religious conflicts with them, such as the recent violence between Croations and Serbs at a football match in Australia. This is just stupid.
Don't worry, you'll be fine!! |
