about apartements ...rent can vary from 300$ upwards...you may be able to get less.....in other cities it can be from 150$ upwards.....if you share with someone it might cost less...but I do not recommend unless you know that person you are sharing with.....for buying propert...you can not buy any property in Australia if you are not a Permanent Resident of Australia.

Do we use coins?

Sorry, no, we use seashells as a monetary unit. Not that they are used that much in everyday life - we prefer the bartering system. Trade a kangaroo tail for two lizards & a goanna etc.

In regard to accommodation - it depends on whether you want just branches or corrugated iron sheets on your humpy.

Well said Kella, a bit of pleasantry goes a long way down under.

Thanks for that info about the seashells Mulgabob - now I know why my bottle tops won't work. Cheers mate :)

That's nice - but you need to let us know where you are from, and where you might be thinking about living. Proprty values differ widely from state to state here. It also might've been nice if you'd thrown in a please somewhere - we do value simple courtesy downunder :-).

We do use coins.

Hopefully you've looked in to the immigration requirements for Australia?? It is quite difficult to get residency here. Sydney is probably the most expensive choice for cost of living and housing. You really should check the property websites like http://www.domain.com.au and http://www.realestate.com.au/ to get a better idea of what is available & what the cost may be.

The_Mouse
Well answered everyone! Yes. We do like people to say "please" and "can you help" once in a while rather than " I want to know everything there is to know". Good manners are still alive and well in the sunburnt country.

"do they use coins or whatever"? LOL you really HAVE NO IDEA about Australia at all do you? How about a bit of research instead of expecting people to do all the leg work around here. It might make you appreciate Australia - YOUR FUTURE HOME - a bit more.

"thinking about moving to Australia"? It is NOT as simple as packing up and then get on a plane, land here and go and buy a house, you know. We don't let any old riff raff into our country. You have to qualify.

Go to http://www.immi.gov.au (Department of Immigration website)
You will need to prove that you worthy to come into this great coutnry of ours. There are a number of thing you must pass:
- Are you willing to eat vegemite for the rest of your life? Are you willing to yell and scream at your local footbal team (be it AFL or rugby league) every weekend?
-Do you know what a lamington is?
-Are you willing to engage in the Great Australian salute especially in summer?
- Are you willing to wear thongs when you go down the beach?
- Are you willing to sit next to a black aboriginal fellow at the pub and shout him a beer?

These are all the things you have to consider before you decide on coming here.

Cheers, mate!

not as easy to move here as you may think.unless you are skilled in work that Australia is looking for or have a relative to sponsor you you may be disappointed.
depending where in Sydney as to how expensive rent will be..........closer to the city the more you pay

and YES we have coins just like you

tentofield
We have 5c, 10c, 20c, 50c, $1 and $2 coins and $5, $10, $20, $50 and $100 notes. Our notes are made of plastic with holograms in them and are just about impossible to forge. They are different sizes so visually impaired people can use them easily and different colours for quick identification.

Prices are still quoted as though 1c and 2c coins were in use ($4.99 for instance) but they are rounded up or down to the nearest 5c for payment. It is the total bill that is rounded, not individual items.

The Australian dollar is currently varying between 80c and 85c US.

Elizabeth
Well said everyone, I really can't add anything I just wanted to give you all a big pat on the back for your great answers.

I went to Woolies today and tried to pay for my groceries with "whatever and seashells" but they insisted on legal tender. You just can't win some days.
