Australia's National Day?

Around Thanksgiving time I asked if anyone outside of Australia knew when Australia's National Day was & what it was called & I on;y had one near answer, the person who sent that answer in thought it might have been a Horse Race which is held in November.
Well although that Horse Race, which is called The Melbourne Cup, is an important event (especially for the City Of Melbourne, which must be the only place in the world which has a Public Holiday for a Horse Race) it is NOT Australia's National Day.
Australia's National Day is, unsuprisingly called AUSTRALIA DAY and it is held on the 26th of January 1788, it commerates the start of British Settlement in Australia when a fleet of 12 ships (the First Fleet) arrived in Botany Bay (now part of Sydney) of the 19th of January 1788, led by a bloke called Captain Arthur Phillip.
but Botany bay was unsuitable for settlement, so every body moved to the next coastal inlet which had a fresh water spring and Sydney & Australia was born

haha really!!?? the Melbourne cup haha!!

Its almost Australia day!!! Hell yeah long weekend!! Im goin to th beach. How bout u??

Wait is there a question I was meant to answer??

EDIT: bout the cup. how is it th 2nd national day or whatever. I hate horse races and dont know anyone who does. To us its just an excuse to get out of clas and sit infront of a stupid TV and talk while th race goes on n then give prizes out to the winners for th school thing. After that, no one cares. Well unless they are actually there and insterested in it of course.

You've answered your own question, if that what it is.

Why should anyone other than us be interested in what and when it is.
We only know about the USA because of TV and movies.
Do we know or care about other countries National Days really?
For example when is the National Day for Greece, France, Italy, Brazil or New Zealand our close neighbour?

Australia Day Saturday the 26th January.
This year the public holiday is Monday the 28th of January.
I had thought we may have missed out on a day off but thankfully we do get one.

Of course the nation of Australia only came into being on January 1, 1901. But we couldn't have a holiday to celebrate that, since January 1 is already a public holiday for New Years Day. Instead we celebrate the foundation of the first European colony on Australian soil, on January 26.

mmdjaajl
so do you have a question or only here to give us a history lesson?

Rosie_0801
Yep, and most of us celebrate it by not being patriotic. I'm going on an SCA camping weekend and will be supporting the Baron of Stormhold. Hoop di doo about Australia day, except for the long weekend.

Good on you for taking the initiative to research this and find out this information for yourself.

We do hear a lot of comments that Americans are not interested in anything outside the US, but you have shown us wrong.

On a humorous note, Melbourne Cup Day is sometimes referred to as Australia's second national day.

The Cup is called 'the race that stops a nation' because for the five minutes before it is run, the two or three minutes it takes to run and the minute it takes to show the results (and prizemoney gamblers will get), the country really does grind to a halt!

Ladies all over the country have lunches on Cup day, complete with Fashion Parades, and men get together in pubs (bars) to enjoy the fun with their mates.

People who would never bet on a race do so on the Cup and say 'well, I am not a gambler but it is the Cup'.

I've put a link so you can see some of the fun for yourself (you'll notice it's on the Australian government website), and another to information about Australia Day events ...

You might guess Australians enjoy a party :-)

Cheers :-)

While Australia Day is one of our National Days, it's not celebrated in any particularly consistent way. Other than doing re-enactments in Sydney, there isn't much tradition to how the rest of us spend the day.

The National Day of Commemoration is ANZAC day. In every city through to every small town in both Australia and New Zealand, there is the ANZAC day ceremony, usually held at dawn and involves the laying of wreaths on the local war memorial and playing of the Last Post. Many towns will have a march of veterans (and increasingly descendants of veterans). Huge numbers of Australians travel every year to Gallipolli in Turkey specifically for the annual ANZAC Day service (the huge loss of Australian servicemen at Gallipoli being the origins of the ANZAC Day commemoration). Many people will buy and wear an ANZAC Day pin (the proceeds go to veterans' or widow's charities).

If you are looking for a day that really unites Australians in a common tradition and shared spirit, it is ANZAC Day.
