Australia and New Zealand as one? |
What do people think about the recent announcement that Australia and New Zealand might unite as one country?
The fact is many years ago when Australia became a federation New Zealand was supposed to be a part of Australia but it changed just before hand. I personally think it's great considering we are so close and so alike already! Plus we will then be bigger than the USA!!!
What does everyone else think? |

I think it makes a lot of sense. Of course, I have only immigrated to New Zealand from the UK, but Australasia to me seems like a landmass that is so much more easily uniteable than Europe. They have so much more in common. In my mind, the two countries are a unity already, but as I said, that's probably because I've come in from the outside. It may feel as outrageous to the population here as it would if someone were to throw the US and Canada in one pot, or Austria and Germany, or England and Wales, but aren't we living in our own time these days? When will we finally start realizing that the only thing we have ahead of us is the future, not the past? I say, Go New Zealalia/ Austrealand ! Make a great part of the world even greater. |

Yeah, why not? Oh, but then Australia couldn't pick and choose which New Zealanders they claim as their own!
But seriously I think it's a good idea - both places are fantastic, put them together and we'd be bloody awesome : ) |

I think you might find there is still provision for NZ to join Oz in the documents that established the Federation.
And we were part of New South Wales, briefly.
No, thanks!!
"God's Own" can do without Oz - "The Fantasy Land". And who would the new country of (?) "Newstralia" have to hate in Rugby, League, Yachting, Netball and the rest? |

It's a nice idea in theory, but there are too many problems.
The distance would cause problems with the economy, e.g. the currency in NZ would be worth less than the currency in Aussie.
Plus you would be dealing with merging two completely different cultures. (Maori & Aborigine etc.)
It's a nice idea, but I can't see how it would ever work.

I can't see it happening. I think the countries have grown somewhat apart since the 80's. Australia is a staunch ally of the US, whereas NZ cares more about its nuclear-free status than its relations with the US (and is not officially an ally in the eyes of the US). Australia supported the war on Iraq; NZ didn't. I know many Australians themselves aren't impressed with the degree their federal government is in bed with the US, so this is not a comparison of the people themselves, but the NZ people don't have to be a part of the Australian federal government, so they (at large) would choose not to.
NZ is a poorer country than Australia (roughly only 80% as wealthy); I don't know if Australia wants to share their wealth over yet another state.
One reason why I wouldn't want us (NZ) to become a part of Australia: I don't want to take on their local car industry protectionism. My Skyline would cost at least another ten grand if I was to buy it in Australia. NZ is a used Japanese car paradise; long may it stay that way. |

hey i'm aussie and this is the first time i've heard anything about it.
but one thing - not gunna happen.
australia is very conservitive and didn't even vote to become a republic, so they're not goint to vote to join with NZ. waaaayyyy too much controversy and problems.
besides who would we hate in the rugby? lol
hope that helps. :) |
