Ben with spikes

Australia has hot Christmas's? does that take some getting used to?

As my previous posts, im moving later this year from the grim UK to Sydney, Australia :D !

One thing i wondered though, here at Christmas, it's cold, and we have the log fires and all that jazz...but looking at my friend's face book profile's and it looks hot on Christmas day!

Is this a weird feeling, does it feel like Xmas at all? or are the seasons the other way round? and does it ever got cool enough to wear a jacket?

Just imagine it would feel weird and not like Xmas at all :(

Thanks :)

Well it's all we know ! White Christmases look great but there's nothing wrong with a seafood buffet , swim in the pool & a siesta in a hammock !

Mel
Of course it feels like Christmas. A winter Christmas would feel weird to us.

It's great being in summer, you can feast on yummy salads and prawns, sit outside in the sun, head to the beach and just enjoy the beautiful weather..

You will love it, I know some people that have moved from the UK also and they love having a summer Christmas.

It doesn't feel weird to us because Australian Christmases are always hot and we have Christmas traditions about going to the beach; swimming in the pool; cold Christmas lunch/dinner etc. The cold ones you're used to are the odd ones as far as we're concerned. Funnily enough though, our Chrismas cards have snow, holly, blazing log fires etc; our Christmas trees have icicles and other cold looking decorations and some people spray fake snow on their windows.

Whether it gets cool enough to wear a jacket depends on where you are in this huge country. It would almost never be cool enough at Christmas time (unless you're a real cold frog), but in many parts of the country, it can get pretty cool in the depths of winter (June/July/August). Some places have a 'Christmas in July' celebration so people who want to can have a more traditional Christmas, but it's all a bit artificial IMO.

You would be suprised people grow up and think well it would be weird to have Christmas time in snow and all that kind of stuff..

I don't live in Australia but I do live in the southern US where most of the years it's warm on Christmas.

I've lived here all my life and the heat doesn't make it seem any less like Christmas. However, I guess someone from up north or from the UK might think its kinda weird. But you'll get used to it I bet :)

It's not wierd to us, but I imagine it would take some getting use to if new to the country, you can always have a dip in the pool or ocean, imagine that on Christmas Day, that's something you wouldn't dream of ever doing during Christmas in the UK.
You will love Sydney, forget about the jacket.

Yes it does take some getting used to.But it is every bit as good as christmas in the UK.After all think about it you get up open your pressies, watch TV family come round and you enjoy christmas dinner, then you watch TV some more. Here we do all those things except watch the TV, we spend more time outside enjoying the company of family and friends(in the sunshine) watching the kids play on there new bike or trampoline.Christmas is whatever you make it in whatever country you are in.

Yes, the seasons are different (why is this not common knowledge??). And why would it take us some getting used to? I've always had summer Christmas. Do you feel weird having a winter one? I know I would feel weird having a cold Christmas, it wouldn't be like Christmas at all if you couldn't go swimming or eat a big lunch out in the backyard while sweltering in a Santa hat. :)

Having lived here all our lives, it's normal to have warm to hot Christmases so we are used to it.

Some people, even those who are born here, do go the traditional roast and hot food. But a lot of people have BBQ's, salads, seafood and "summery" foods rather than traditional fare. Quite often people enjot the great outdoors, go to the beach or swimming or other cooling activities.

A lot of people do have "Christmas in July". Not so much a presents and stuff thing, but being cooler or cold, the whole traditional stuff - roasts and stuff are a lot more enjoyable...

A few years ago it reached 40C on Xmas Day
But its really just another summers day..

With the jacket bit we would have very different standards. Most of us would put a jacket on if the temperature dropped below 20C but i'm guessing that's not cold for you?

And some families celebrate "christmas in july" (like mine) as well as the normal december christmas, so that they can feel like they're having a nice cold christmas

BUBBLE BUTT
ask yourself why this is grim UK....

cause everyone else is coming here and we are moving away
