Australia or New Zealand?

My husband and I live in England. He is a pharmacist and I am a housewife. He is Indian and I am Irish. We have a 16 month old son.

We are in our early 30's and are thinking of re-locating to either NZ or AU. I have family in AU and friends in NZ.

I know that racism exists in any country on this planet and that there are many other things to think of, but from the perspective of Australian or New Zealand people, what do you think of couples who are foreign, as in, not from your country originally and the wife is Irish and the husband is Indian?

I'd be grateful for any 'human' advice about anything that we haven't thought of before we decide which country we should apply to.

We are both highly educated but I have suffered from depression in the past and I think that counts as a 'mental illness' so I'm not sure if that would go against us? I only mention it as an aside.

Thanks in advance for any advice!

:)

The reason why I don't ask my uncle (who lives in Adelaide) or my friends (who live in NZ) is that we want to be logical rather than be influenced by our loved ones. If we decide to apply to NZ then we'll ask our friends there for advice, if to AU then we'll ask my uncle but we want to decide first what our choice is and then take it from there. We both kind of love NZ the most from a personal level but we're trying to be practical and think dispassionately before we decide where to place our dreams for our future.

Make your Skilled Working visa application before your ages make you ineligible, and come on down.

I know heaps of inter-racial couples including two couples fairly similar to yours. They have no problems whatsoever here in Brisbane and I would expect the story to be much the same in every city. As with any country, we have our red-necks, but you'll find the vast majority of people to be very accepting and friendly. If you have an open mind, the people you meet will too.

As an Australian, I'm biased towards Oz, but as a far larger country (in terms of population, resources and trade as well as sheer size), you'll find the opportunities to be better here. That said, I really don't think you could go wrong with either country - they're both great places.

I wouldn't worry about your history of depression making it more difficult for you to get your visa, but you will be a long way from familiar places and people and will need to be prepared to get support if you feel at all isolated in a new country. You'll find people here to be kind and helpful but you will need to be prepared to meet them half way with a positive attitude to your new life.

As a pharmacist, your husband will be able to earn good money and you should have a very good and comfortable lifestyle wherever you choose to live. If you wish to go back to work at some stage, we have excellent subsidised childcare throughout the country.

All the best - Australia will be a wonderful place to bring up your son. I'm sure you'll be very happy here.

I'm from NZ so of course i would say NZ(aust is cool apart from it is full of Australians, HA HA). i would suggest that you spend a few months visiting your friends and families in both countries and then decide. it seems a bit much to make your choice based on chatting to people over the Internet. good luck, you face a very tough choice and i hope you enjoy the country of your choosing.

As a New Zealander, i too would say New Zealand, of course again I am also a bit biased!
You and your husband as far as I can say would have no major racial problems over here, we too are a hugely mutlicultural nation and welcome people of any race.
It is true that Australia being a bigger country would possibly have more oppurtunities regarding work but from a lifestyle perspective New Zealand has all you could want and more.

Are you interested in the outdoors? if so tramping in New Zealand is a favoured pass-time amongst many kiwis and we have so many beautiful world renowned walking tracks, you never get bored in NZ (and i say this after having travelled to Australia, throughout the United States and Over to the UK and many parts of Europe. New Zealand is definetly home for me).
Good luck with your decision and I hope the move goes well :-)
also you could ask this question in the NZ section too if you wnat more kiwi perspectives :-)

Well the choice is up to you really. They both have their good points;

Australia - bigger and therefore more shopping, restaurants and cafes, night life, etc. + more things to do.

New Zealand - very peaceful with some of the most beautiful scenery I have ever seen.

I am from Sydney, Australia and can tell you that while I was in school all the way until now, most of my friends have been foreigners as well as Aussies.

It doesn't matter (at least to me) what you are or where you came from, if you're great people, you will get great friends :-)

Australia
Hi,
I'm Australian living in NZ.. I would say Australia by far not because that is where i'm from but it will be more beneficial to your family. BETTER money, we hear on the news here in NZ how many NZ'rs are moving every year to australia for a better lifestyle. Health sytem is by far more advance and cheaper. You can apply for a medicare card eventually which is very beneficial as NZ does not offer this.
The weather is sooooooooooo much better in Australia. Racism... well you most probably get that anywhere you travel, i would hope to say it would not be too bad in Adelaide, most parts of australia, we are a very multicultural country. I love everyone. haha so i won't offend :)
I don't really think you have to mention depression, a lot of mothers suffer this side effect from givibg birth etc so i don't think that would go against you.
We are moving back in a few months YAY!! because we know we would way better off financially and we love the lifestyle.
Hope this helps.

Both are good choices but in terms of racism and avoiding it, it really depends where abouts you live in which country. I have family from both and lived in both. In the north Island of NZ, there are a lot of different cultures and not a lot of racism (compared to other countries). The south island is quite a bit more conservative and mostly europeans. In Australia it is very multi-cultural except there is still a lot of racism (mostly against asians), but then again it depends on what area you live in. Avoid Cronulla in NSW!

I'm from Australia, so here's our rules and my point of view. Australia being a bigger country, I think there would be more opportunity for you.

Firstly, if you're going to immigrate do it soon. There is a cut off at 35 years of age.

With your husbands 'skill' as a pharmacist you may be eligable for skilled migration. http://www.immi.gov.au talks all the legalities.

Most people wont care about your ethnicity, Australia is very multicultural. We dont care if you're black, white, purple, or pink with green stripes.

I don't know whether your depression would have any influence on the government allowing you migration, its pretty common these days so if your under control it shouldn't be a problem.

A lot of people are looking to move to Australia, so here some questions other have asked with may be helpful.

I live in Australia, and I don't care what ethnicity a couple may be. But I guess it would depend on what area you moved into. I would personally recommend Australia, but I am quite biased in this regard. I've heard New Zealand referred to as "Australia Junior". But since I've visited America, I'd refer to Australia as "America Junior".

As I said, it would depend on what area you moved in to. If you moved into the generally poorer areas with government housing and such, or moved into an area with a large number of youths (like a high school near by or something), you could expect maybe some issues. I say this because kids are generally insensitive pricks despite upbringing, and the poorer areas tend to have more of the "The Immigrants are taking all of our jobs!" mentality.

But if you move to a place that is reasonably well off, you shouldn't expec any problems.
