I think it should be abolished, I'm disgusted at parents who allow their children to knock on the door of a stranger |

Personally I really do not like the way that this particular American custom has over run the rest of us.
It is originally an Irish / Celtic custom which became appeared as a 'new' custom in the USA during the 1930's.
In Scotland and Ireland it's traditional name is 'guising' and it used to be that young children only got dressed up and they had to perform small entertainments (eg: singing songs, reciting poems, telling a joke etc. before being given gifts of sweets.
A a child in Ireland I used to go 'guising' BUT only to family and near neighbours who knew us and who asked us to go or asked our parents to let us go. If you hadn't been asked then you couldn't go.
Today's so called tradition of 'trick or treating' and going to the houses of strangers to basically beg / harass people for money and sweets is bang out of order and I hate it, yes deport it back to the USA. |

In our neighbourhood teenagers rock the houses with eggs.
I've also seen young people shout abuse and swear at the occupants of a house if they don't receive any "treats". Or banging on the doors when no-one answers.
It is just another reason to roam the streets looking for "fun".

It is stupid, dangerous and meaningless |

Future Eagles Mummy!!
|
Yup! Wherever it originated, it should go back there and keep away from Oz!! My kids will never trick or treat. Commercialised crap!! |

yes but do you know that trick or treat started in Ireland. |

I think its best we let it lay low re trick and treating and not start something we will regret later on down the road, mainly because of how violent the teenagers are becoming and because its so unsafe for children to do this because they may knock on some sicko's door. |

Yes. I don't believe in Halloween. It's all American. I think kids don't understand what it all means either, it's just another way of getting sweets. |
|

The Mouse II
|
No - because 99% of them are Australians.
Just sad to see our kids are becoming Americanised. They see it as a fun thing not as a cultural thing.
When they come trick or treating, just tell them politely that we are not Americans.
Cheers |

Yes, i think Halloween is stupid, never 'trick or treated' as a kid, never going to encourage it to others either. Surprisingly nobody at all came door knocking last night, usually there are a few but there have been gradually less and less kids coming in recent years, that is a good sign. It should be totally faded out of Australia! |

Yes it is annoying. We know all the local kids who come around, but once again its just another thing from America that we don't want. (I know it didn't originate in America, but it's clearly a big thing in America and that's why it's caught on). I still live at home and we got home from dinner last night and I turned the outside light on and within seconds there were 13 kids at our door, my mum was so angry at me lol. I just wasn't expecting it. Next we'll be having thanksgiving =S. Lol, Give me a good Aussie day bbq, Christmas and Easter that'll do me. |

yes, so annoying. luckily none came to my place this year. |

The kids like it and that's all that counts. They have fun and they get some lollies from the neighbours. It's good fun for them.
Some of the replies here seem to indicate that we shouldn't do it because it's American. Using that logic I'll assume that those people will stop using Yahoo Answers as that's American too. Stop using the internet too, that was invented in America. |

Hell yeah. We don't celebrate that rubbish in Australia so idiot parents shouldn't be encouraging their kids to roam the streets asking for handouts. Food costs too much these days to be giving it away to greedy little kids who should know better. |

I think in the right neighbourhood, under supervision and if the kids actually bother to dress up, why not give them a little something. By right neighbourhood, if you live in a small cul-de-sac and know your neighbours, all the kids could do it and have a great time.
If you get two 16 yr old in their normal clothes knocking on your door, they don't deserve anything. |

I know you said Australia people only,However ...The,"?" left it open to others! The Holiday is fun, meant to be so.It is a pity, there are idiots out there that ruin it for others.I love to see how creative people can be,I love to see the small children dress up and have fun,I always buy way too much candy, anticipating a lot of knocks at my door.My family and I,do junk food for dinner, pizza, soda. We enjoy movies(not too scary though),with snacks, such as,cupcakes, cake, you name it,we all have a blast, clean innocent fun.We stay up late,is the one night they may do so ;)
We Americans should not be the only ones to have so much.Lighten up huh! |
