Its both an island and a Continent, and to the bright spark above me, you have no idea?

Its a continent because it's so big. And to the loser who posted first, Australians are very smart and organised. And I wonder why america with such a plentiful supply of money and a huge power base still has 1/2 of its citizens living below the poverty line. Compare this to Australia where 80% or so live comforatbly.... Until you dont come to our lovely nation dont comment because ignorant people as your self have no idea...

It's both. As it has water on all sides, technically it's also an island.

...and it's fabulous! I was there 3 weeks ago.

Ships Ahoy
I hate to disagree with every post so far but contray to popular belief, Australia IS NOT a continent.

Australia is one of 20 countries in the continent of Australasia. The countries are: Australia, Christmas Island, Cocos-Keeling Islands, Cook Islands, Fiji, French Polynesia, Kiribati, Nauru, New Caledonia, New Zealand, Niue, Papua New Guinea, Pitcairn Islands, Solomon Islands, Tokelau, Tonga, Tuvalu, Vanuatu Wallis & Futuna and Western Samoa.

The mainland (as it is called) of Australia is a huge island but the country is more than that one island, it actually contains 8,222 islands.

It is both. It is the world's largest island and the world's smallest continent.

Its an island continent. Or a continental island. Take your pick. Drive across the entire width of it and you'll never think its just an island again ... its massive.

Both, Australia is the only Nation that occupies a continent, The island continent
Australia is the only nation that occupies a continent. With an area of 7 682 300km2, it is the sixth-largest country in area after Russia, Canada, China, the United States and Brazil.
The continent is one of the oldest land masses - continental bedrock exposed by erosion is more than 3000 million years old - and is the flattest of the continents. After Antarctica, it has the lowest precipitation of any continent. Vast areas are arid or semi-desert, unsuitable for settlement.

The average elevation is less than 300m, compared with the world’s mean of about 700m. The Australian Alps in the south east contain Australia’s highest ground, the highest point being Mount Kosciusko (2228m).

Nearly a third of the continent lies in the tropics, and the rest is in the temperate zone. The coldest regions are in the highlands and tablelands of Tasmania and the south-eastern corner of the mainland.

The climate ranges from tropical in the north to temperate in the south. Summer is from December to February, autumn (fall) from March to May, winter from June to August, and spring from September to November.

BOLÍVAR Libertador de América
It is a dumb nation.
