they are not joking. on average australians are the fattest people on the planet. while there are more fat people in the united states, there are also more people in the united states who cannot afford to buy enough food to eat, so therefore more underweight people. the percentage of people who cannot afford enough to eat in australia is lower and therefore the average australian is more overweight than the average american. |

it's true. i heard about it in the news. couldnt believe it myself. would have thought it would be between the united states and the united kingdom.
however, according to online though, naura is the fattest country in the world, with 94.5% overweight, federal states of micronesia 2nd at 91.1%, followed by cook islands at 90.9%, tonga with 90.8%, niue at 81.7%, samoa with 80.4%, palau with 78.4%, kuwait at 74.2%, united states of america at 74.1%, and kiribati at 73.6%, covering the top 10 fattest countries in the world in terms of obesity. so maybe they're just talking of BMI. according to the latter source, autralia sits at 26% and america at 25%. |

In relation to BMI, It is not a definitive measurement. I have a BMI of 29, I am 6 foot 3 and weigh 104kg (230 lbs). However, I have to climb as part of my job, I exercise nearly everyday, lift weights and walk for 5 km per day. According to BMI, I believe that I am nearly obese, however I am fit. |

Latest statistics have shown that a higher percentage of Australians are overweight then Amercians.
Though I believe American still hold the lead for obesity.
Don't forget if your 1kg over weight, your still counted as being over weight.
Australias population is only 21million so for half to be over weight is only 10.5mill where the same percentage in America is 152mill.
Though If I recall correctly, the statistics they used to prove Australias lead in being over weight, they only actually surveyed 600 people. |

No. America is number 1# and Australia comes second.
FACT: Over 60% of American adults are Obese... =(
Australia is catching up... =( I don't know if they will ever overtake them but I doubt it because we are starting to care way more about being healthy and having a healthy and safe lifestyle.
Haven't you seen all the 'weight-loss' adds.. lol
Rove jokes around too much.. but he's cool... |

Yes, it is a known fact. However, I have been to Australia, and I never once saw an obese person.
Although it is not a fact, I believe that America is home to the most obese people. |

The Fattest Country :
#1 United States: 30.6%
#2 Mexico: 24.2%
#3 United Kingdom: 23%
#4 Slovakia: 22.4%
#5 Greece: 21.9%
#6 Australia: 21.7%
#7 New Zealand: 20.9%
#8 Hungary: 18.8%
#9 Luxembourg: 18.4%
#10 Czech Republic 14.8%
DEFINITION: Percentage of total population who have a BMI (body mass index) greater than 30 Kg/sq.meters (Data for Australia, Austria and Portugal is from 2002.
All other data is from 2003). Obesity rates are defined as the percentage of the population with a Body Mass Index (BMI) over 30. The BMI is a single number that evaluates an individual's weight status in relation to height (weight/height2, with weight in kilograms and height in metres).
For Australia, the United Kingdom and the United States, figures are based on health examinations, rather than self-reported information.
Obesity estimates derived from health examinations are generally higher and more reliable than those coming from self-reports, because they preclude any misreporting of people's height and weight. However, health examinations are only conducted regularly in a few countries (OECD). |

Apparently we are now the fattest going by some survey thing.... but think about the difference in the amount of people! our percentage gets higher alot faster when you start counting averages! compared to the amunt of ppl here and amount there i think we are still reasonably healthy compared to them!
PLUS the main reason we are gaining weight is because of junk food that americans introduced us to!! .... I would be a little embaressed being an american for the fact that their 'national/native food' is almost all fast food oulets!!! they made themselves fat , now they are doing it to us! |

this is true... its absolutly discusting.. u look around the streets and some people have big bellys others are large in all areas. its becoming worse with our city becoming more and more busy making people have less time to make a healthy lunch, dinner and breakfast instead many people eat out and take away. they believe it saves time and less washing up, in fact it is destorying their lives. |
